In recent years, the number of public employment positions opened through competitive examinations has skyrocketed. This has led many private sector employees to seek salary improvements and job stability in the shadow of the public administration, leaving the private sector without qualified labor.
A study carried out by the consulting firm More Than Research and the Adams academy for opponents has prepared a profile of the 2024 opponent and the data shows that the private sector is failing to retain its talent.
The public sector steps up. The public sector analyzed its workforce and discovered that, over the next decade, there was going to be a massive wave of retirements at a rate of 100,000 retirements per year. At least 60% of the officials currently active will have retired in less than ten years and there are not enough replacement personnel for them.
For this reason, the Administration has been setting records for several years in the call for new positions for civil servants to replace those who are going to retire in the coming years.
45% of opponents already have a job. The data from the study reveal that 45% of those who apply for an opposition do so while working in a private sector company, while 16% are students looking for a professional opportunity after completing their training.
Only 6% of opponents are unemployed and 22% of opponents do so either to advance in their civil service career or to consolidate their interim position and become civil servants.
What is sought is tranquility. 43% of those surveyed cite the professional stability of the Public Administration as the main reason for opposition, in the face of an uncertain and unstable labor market in the public sector. 36% of those surveyed refer to salary improvements and 34% to improvements in working conditions.
According to a report based on 2021 consolidated data from the Bank of Spain, public sector salaries exceed their counterparts in the private sector by 24.97%. According to a Bankinter report based on data from the INE, barely 10% of public sector employees earn a salary equivalent to the SMI (15,876 euros annually), while in the private sector this range rises to 29.3%.
Woman under 45 years of age and with a career. The most common profile of the opponent in 2024 is that of a person between 25 and 44 years old who seeks to consolidate their professional career in a stable professional environment through the public service. 55% of the people who oppose are women, while men represent 45% of the candidates.
33% of the positions announced in 2023 had a requirement to have university studies, which points to highly qualified employees. 23% of the places required high school studies or equivalent and for 23% of the vacancies, a ESO graduate degree was required.
