Bluesky, this social network that was still little-known a few months ago, is now asserting itself as a serious competitor in the battle for alternatives to users in November, doubling its subscriber base since September. This dazzling growth coincides with a wave of departures from
The attractive alternative
Bluesky is particularly popular in the United States, where usage of its app has jumped 519% since the presidential election, and in the United Kingdom, where the increase is 352%, according to Similarweb data. In terms of visits to its website, Bluesky even outstripped Threads, the alternative launched by Meta, in these two countries. Although Threads remains well ahead with 275 million monthly active users, Bluesky’s growth is much faster and attracting attention.
One reason for Bluesky’s growing appeal is its philosophy. Unlike X or Threads, Bluesky focuses on a more personalized user experience, favoring news feeds constructed by the user rather than generated by algorithms. The platform also offers tools to make the transition from X easier, such as “starter kits” for following recommended accounts or an extension that helps find old contacts.
This approach appears to be paying off: Bluesky became the number one app on the US App Store in November, surpassing Threads and its Android application since the beginning of the year. Even larger spikes were seen in Brazil during the country’s brief ban on X, although some users later returned to X once the ban was lifted.
For users, Bluesky represents a credible alternative in a changing social media landscape. If its audience remains much lower than that of X for the moment, it stands out for its dynamism and its image as a “healthier” network. The challenges remain numerous, particularly in maintaining this growth over the long term and expanding its audience beyond its current base. But Bluesky has managed to capture attention and could establish itself tomorrow as a platform on which to count against X and Threads.
