Even if it means adapting one of the most important stories of human civilization, we might as well not do things by halves. Christopher Nolan clearly understood that his The Odyssey would mark a turning point for the film industry and he put all the chances on his side to bring about one of the most ambitious films ever produced.
Personally, it is the most epic project of his career. Coming from the one who hatched a trilogy Batman of all the superlatives and Interstellar et Inception with colossal visual ambitions, there is reason to look forward to the adventures of Ulysses. During an interview for Empirethe filmmaker delivered some details about his behemoth of the big screen. Juggernaut for good reason.

609 kilometers of film
The two-time Oscar-winning director relied on analog and IMAX to tell the story of Ulysses’ quest and the many challenges that await him. More than 609 kilometers of film were used to capture the character on the waves. He explains:
“We took the actors who play the crew of Ulysses’ ship on real waves, in real places. And yes, it is immense, terrifying, wonderful and benevolent, according to the changing conditions. By integrating the physical dimension of the real world into the making of the film, we enrich the narrative in an interesting way.”
On the sets for four months now, Christopher Nolan has held back nothing to bring these legendary stories to the cinema.
“As a filmmaker, you seek what has never been done before. I found that all these great mythological works that I grew up with — the films of Ray Harryhausen and others — I had never seen them treated with the weight and credibility that a top-notch budget and a big Hollywood production in IMAX can provide.”
And what a budget! According to sources interviewed by The Hollywood Reporter, Christopher Nolan benefits from a budget of 250 million dollars pour The Odyssey. It is the most expensive film of the director’s career, the first shot entirely in IMAX. It’s a bet for Universal Pictures which hopes to create the event in cinemas around the world next summer.
Nolan is not only relying on his technical prowess to dazzle his audience, he has assembled a Dantesque cast to accompany Matt Damon’s Ulysses. Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, Anne Hathaway, Zendeya, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson and Jon Bernthal are among the actors and actresses summoned for this project.
So see you as soon as next July 15 to the cinema to find out if The Odyssey stands out as a film of divine proportions. Nolan may be holding his Avatar.
