Don’t be fooled by the slightly different name, the Sony WH-1000XM5SA is the exact same WH-1000XM5 pair that we’ve raved about over the years. The only difference is that the WH-1000XM5SA comes with a soft case whereas the typical pair come equipped with a hard case.
We’d argue that a soft case is better suited for those who like to travel light, as it takes up much less space than the alternative.
Praised by us for being “among the best sounding headphones at their price”, although they’ve since been succeeded by the WH-1000XM6, the Sony WH-1000XM5SA holds a special place in our hearts – especially as it’s seen a consistent price cut over time.
We found that Sony WH-1000XM5SA offers a “richness” that makes the headphones a “relaxing and non-fatiguing listen”, and it can handle a range of music genres too.
One of the standout features for the Sony WH-1000XM5SA is its ANC which we found was able to hush everything from voices and big crowds to traffic and even keep the noisy tube at bay. In addition, its call quality was nothing short of superb, as the headphones didn’t pick up any background noise.
Overall we gave the Sony WH-1000XM5 (remember, that is the same as the WH-1000XM5SA, just the case it comes with is different) a five-star rating, with AV Editor Kob Monney concluding “as an all-round pair of headphones, the Sony are excellent”.
