In the aftermath of the demonstrations “No Kings” aimed at denouncing what participants perceive as the authoritarian excesses of the Trump government, the personal data of hundreds of American officials has just been disclosed by a group of hackers, presumably seeking to continue online protests. The action carried out by the collective “The Com” (already linked to several large-scale cyberattacks against the operator AT&T, Ticketmaster or even Rockstar and GTA VI) aims in fact the FBI, le Department of Homeland Security (DHS), de l’Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as well as le Department of Justice (DOJ).
The American immigration agency has been engaged in controversy for several weeks now (brutal arrests, use of the Pokémon license to promote expulsions, etc.), so much so that its pronounced presence in the compromised data leaves little room for doubt regarding the nature of this attack.
Where does this data come from and what does it contain?
Hackers released several spreadsheets containing the names, email addresses, phone numbers and sometimes residential addresses of more than 1,000 employees of the departments that we have just mentioned. The files were analyzed by media 404, verified by the company District 4 Labs, and do indeed correspond to employees of the American government. How this data was obtained remains unclear, but some sources already believe that it is a compilation of previous leaks and a possible recent infiltration into government servers.
The hackers also published an open ransom, accompanied by messages such as “Mexican cartels, contact us! We are releasing confidential documents, where are our millions?“, which help to reinforce the idea that this attack responds to the current political context. This mention of the Mexican cartels refers to recent statements from the Department of Homeland Security. The latter affirmed that the cartels would seek to obtain American information for enormous sums of money, while no official proof yet allows this information to be verified.
Not long ago, the American government mentioned an increase in “more than 1000%“attacks targeting agents and other law enforcement agencies. These figures could not be verified and have already been criticized by experts, but the nature of today’s cyberattack nevertheless allows us to assert that the political war between activists and institutions is in full swing in Uncle Sam’s country.
