Every week, Netflix drops a bunch of new content for viewers to stream from TV and movie studios all over the world. Watching all of it would take you way too much time, so I decided to start my Friday by recommending three top picks for the weekend and week to come. Schedule your viewing around these shows and movies, and I’ll be watching along with you. This week sees a few new things hit, including a new adult animated comedy, Korean dramas, movies, and more. Here’s what you should check out.
This Week on Netflix: PCMag’s Picks
Long Story Short (Aug. 22)
The new animated series from the creator of Bojack Horseman represents a pretty huge pivot, as there are no talking animals with depression. Long Story Short follows three siblings from the Schwooper family, moving back and forth through time to explore their relationships with the rest of the family and each other. It’s already been renewed for a second season.

Aema (Aug. 22)
There’s always a ton of new Korean content hitting Netflix, but Aema caught my interest with its unconventional premise and setting. It launches us back to the 1980s, when the domestic film market was starting to explode, and follows a high-profile actress with a hot temper who gets replaced by an untrained ingenue in an erotic film. Looks steamy and compelling.
The Thursday Murder Club (Aug. 28)
As somebody approaching old age, I appreciate a media franchise that shows geezers like myself doing stuff. Based on a best-selling novel, The Thursday Murder Club follows a quartet of retirees who, instead of bingo or gardening, use their newfound spare time to solve cold cases the cops can’t handle. But when a dead person shows up unexpectedly, their hobby becomes something a little bit more serious.
