Amazon’s back with a new smart display for Indian homes — the Echo Show 5 (3rd Gen). And if you’re someone who’s already using Alexa or planning to get a new smart home space, this little upgrade might be of interest. It brings a familiar compact design, but with improved sound, a sharper display, and a built-in camera.
The Echo Show 5 isn’t just about talking to Alexa; it also features a 5.5-inch screen. You can ask it to show the weather, play music videos, stream a quick recipe, or even glance at your to-do list and calendar. Think of it as your personal assistant, music player, and home hub. How does it differ from the Amazon’s 2nd Gen Echo Show 5?
Amazon 3rd Gen Echo Show 5: What’s New?
While the display size remains the same at 5.5-inch, the new version sports a more refined design with rounded edges and an infinity cover glass that enhances the overall look and feel. Both generations retain the compact form factor, physical camera shutter, and microphone mute switch for privacy.
One of the key improvements in the third-gen Echo Show 5 is sound quality. It comes with a 1.7-inch rear-firing speaker that Amazon claims offers double the bass and clearer vocals compared to the second-gen model. The older version featured a 1.65-inch front-firing speaker with more basic audio output. There’s also a noticeable internal upgrade with the inclusion of Amazon’s AZ2 Neural Edge processor in the new model, which is expected to improve responsiveness and enable faster Alexa interactions.
In terms of smart features, both versions support Alexa voice commands, video calling, music streaming, and smart home controls. However, the third-gen Echo Show 5 introduces improved support for remote home monitoring using the built-in camera. Users can use features like Drop In or connect to compatible video doorbells and security cameras to view live feeds. Streaming services like Amazon Prime Video continue to be supported, along with music platforms such as Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Music, and JioSaavn.
One trade-off in the newer model is the removal of the 3.5mm audio jack, which was available in the second-gen version for those who preferred connecting to external speakers. The microUSB port, useful for Ethernet adapters, is also missing in the latest version.
