On Friday AMD sent out their initial batch of kernel graphics driver feature changes intended for merging to the Linux 6.18 kernel later this year.
This initial batch of AMDGPU and AMDKFD compute driver changes for Linux 6.18 aren’t too particularly exciting compared to some of the recent kernel releases, but there still are a few weeks to go where they may have additional feature code ready for merging to DRM-Next.
This initial pull of AMDGPU/AMDKFD driver changes for Linux 6.18 does contain many fixes affecting Variable Rate Refresh (VRR), SR-IOV, Panel Replay, EDID handling, and other IP blocks.
On the technical side there is work on PCIe DPC (PCI Express Downstream Port Containment) with this pull request. There is also expanded Video Core Next (VCN) reset support, Video Processing Engine (VPE) per-queue reset support, and eDP ALPM support. Arguably most interesting with this pull request is adding eDP AUX-less ALPM support. Embedded DisplayPort 1.4 supports AUX-Less Advance Power Management where the source device can control the power-off capabilities with PHY-related sequences on the Main Link for power savings with modern laptop displays. With ALPM there is fast wake and fast sleep capabilities in particular for more aggressive power savings.
