More than a year after its release (almost two years), Sony’s PlayStation VR2 is far away, very far from being a success. The communication and support of the Japanese firm are light years away from what they were for the first PSVR in 2016 which quickly became the market leader. Almost two years after the release of PSVR2, the results are quite sad, with very few big gamesalmost no communicationet zero emphasis.
However, and this is perhaps the magic of Christmas, we learn today that the manufacturer plans to bring a fairly interesting new functionality to its accessory: hand tracking.
PlayStation VR2 receives new features
After receiving PC compatibility during the year, we learned that the PlayStation VR2 controllers would soon become compatible with the Apple Vision Pro. Sony thus showed its desire to make its headphones and accessories more accessible. Unfortunately, this did not allow PSVR2 owners to discover new experiences. At least, for now.
Because yes, it seems that Sony hasn’t completely forgotten his virtual reality headset. According to UploadVR, Sony recently demonstrated the PlayStation VR2 with support for hand tracking without a controller. This demo reportedly took place during SIGGRAPH Asia 2024, an academic conference and trade show focused on “computer graphics and interactive techniques.”

Of course, for the moment, Sony did not communicate on this. The manufacturer has, however, published a description of the demo, specifying that the hand tracking functionality is already available with the PS5 development kit. However, in May 2023, Sony filed a patent for several hand tracking features different.
At the moment, it is not known if Sony plans to release an update to bring this new feature to its headset. We can imagine that from next year, Sony could offer a PSVR2 pack without controllers to reduce the cost headset and suggest PSVR Sense 2 on sale individually. Thanks to this, it will be possible to purchase the controllers separately, for owners of the Apple Vision Pro and PSVR 2 players who do not want to play with their hands all the time.
