Nintendo continues to share information about Super Mario Galaxy: the filmsand this new trailer revealed during a Nintendo Direct entirely dedicated to the feature film confirms one thing. Illumination and the Kyoto firm are more assertive than ever in their desire to speak directly to players. After a first preview last November, this new trailer lifts the veil a little more on the extent of the references that await fans upon its release, scheduled for April 1, 2026 In France.
The opening sequence propels Mario and Luigi into the heart of the Sand Kingdom, directly inspired by Super Mario Odyssey. The two brothers come across the Tostarenans, skeletal inhabitants with a mariachi look, who alert them to a strange phenomenon in the region. Their exploration leads them into a dark cavern, to an encounter that many have been waiting for since the post-credits scene of the 2023 film. Indeed, Yoshi finally makes his entrance.
The green dinosaur, at first as suspicious as the two plumbers, quickly joins the team and establishes himself as a new traveling companion. A symbolic arrival, as the character has become one of the pillars of the universe Mario over the decades. But Yoshi isn’t the only surprise in this trailer.

The trailer then continues with a nod to Super Mario Bros. 2. We discover a quick confrontation scene between Princess Peach and Birdo, famous for her role as boss in this cult episode. Birdo, true to his reputation, pelts Peach with eggs. Further on, spectators can see Luigi in a frog outfit, the famous Frog Suit, as well as a flash of Lakitu, another emblematic enemy of the franchise.

The return of Toad, still played by Keegan-Michael Key, is also a significant event although he appears visibly annoyed by Yoshi’s express integration into the group. The team dynamic is further revealed in a scene where the entire troupe is fleeing a realistic dinosaur taken directly from Super Mario Odyssey. Fans will even be treated to the “baby” version of Mario and Luigi.
At the end of the presentation, Chris Meledandri, boss of Illumination, confirmed that the film had completed its animation and was now entering the post-production phase. A key step that brings fans a little closer to this new journey into the Mushroom Kingdom and beyond.
After the colossal success of the first film in 2023, which exceeded $1 billion at the global box office, Super Mario Galaxy: the films seems determined to push the fan service cursor even further. Nintendo and Illumination want to offer the general public an accessible adventure, while transforming each scene into a playground for fans of winking.
