Apple has reached an agreement that will prevent it from having to face a class action lawsuit for the recording private conversations with Siriaccording to the company in an unintentional way, which Apple apparently later “facilitated” to advertisers.
This is stated by several owners of Apple mobile devices. According to Reuters, the case, which is part of a lawsuit filed in a California federal court in Oakland, revolves around the activation of Siri during calls, which led Apple to provide fragments of those conversations to advertisers.
Although voice assistants are usually only activated when their users say a phrase or expression set for them to come into operation, the accusation in this case alleged that the plaintiffs had been shown advertisements for products from certain brands. that they had mentioned in what they believed were private conversations.
To prevent the lawsuit from succeeding, Apple has agreed to pay $95 million. The period covered by this lawsuit is from September 17, 2014 to December 31, 2024, and the agreement would. several tens of millions of people could receive a small compensation for having their conversations recorded without consent. At most, they could receive $20 for each device they have that has Siri integrated, from an iPhone to an Apple Watch.
Apple has not wanted to comment on the agreement it has reached, although it has explicitly denied in court that it has committed any crime. Of course, the agreement has not gone badly at all, since 95 million is a tiny part of his profits, and he can achieve this figure in a few hours. In its last fiscal year alone it achieved net income of $93.74 billion.
It is not the only case related to voice assistants that is pending in California. There is another similar one, submitted by Google Voice Assistant users before a federal court in San Jose, and the lawyers representing the prosecution and the accused are the same as those in the Apple case that has just been closed.
