In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports that Apple has “largely written off the Mac Pro.”
The Mac Pro was last updated in 2023 with the M2 Ultra chip, and there are no plans for a new update anytime soon.
Gurman outlines that Apple’s Mac Pro strategy “doesn’t look set to change anytime soon.” Apple is no longer working on an M4 Ultra chip, and the Mac Pro that was slated to include that chip “was also nixed,” he says.
This means Apple’s next high-end Apple SIlicon chip will be the M5 Ultra, and it’s currently only destined for the Mac Studio. This suggests that “the Mac Pro won’t be updated in 2026 in a significant way.”
“From what I’ve heard inside the company, Apple has largely written off the Mac Pro,” Gurman writes. “The sentiment internally is that the Mac Studio now represents both the present and future of Apple’s professional desktop strategy.”
If you’re looking for a reason to believe, the report doesn’t explicitly say Apple will never release a new Mac Pro. That might be grasping at straws, though. As it stands right now, it’s clear the Mac Studio is the way forward for people who want the most powerful Mac possible.
Should Apple properly revamp the Mac Pro for the Apple Silicon era? Or is the Mac Studio the best path forward? Let us know down in the comments.
