Apple is developing a successor to the Magic Mouse that could address at least one of its biggest design issues, according to a report from Bloomberg published on Sunday.
Since its launch back in 2009, Apple’s mouse has only gotten minor tweaks. In 2015, it switched from using two AA batteries to a Lightning port charging system. This year, it got a USB-C port to match Apple’s latest charging standards and make it more compatible with more charging cables.
Today, the accessory still faces criticism over its poor ergonomics and the impracticality of its bottom-mounted charging port. The charging port’s location makes it impossible to use while it’s recharging, meaning you have to switch to a different mouse or use a trackpad when the Magic Mouse’s charge dies. But Apple has already been prototyping a few different versions of its next Magic Mouse and is expected to change its charging port’s placement.
The next mouse isn’t expected for another 12 to 18 months, though. This is reportedly because once the design is finalized, it could take Apple’s hardware, software, and operations teams several months or years after that to bring the finished product to the market.
If you don’t want to wait for the next Apple mouse redesign, there are other wireless mice already on the market that can be used while charging and are compatible with Macs and PCs, like Logitech’s G Pro Superlight 2. Or there’s the Kensington Pro Fit Ergo TB550 mouse, which has a trackball and can go for four months on one charge.

Apple is also working on upgrades to its next-gen AirTags and Apple Watches. It’ll reportedly make it more difficult to remove the next-gen AirTag’s speakers in an effort to stop stalkers from using the tracking device. The tracker might also get new tech that could dramatically extend its discovery range.
The Apple Watch, on the other hand, could also get some useful features in the form of blood pressure monitoring and satellite texting. Updated versions of both the AirTag and the Apple Watch are expected to be announced in 2025.
