Apple and advertising, it is a relationship that intensifies over the years. The company has already placed announcements in the App Store, Apple News and Stock Exchange. More recently, it has extended its advertising model to its sporting offer. Today is the turn of plans to be in the viewfinder.
Apple and advertising, already a long history
According to an indiscretion of BloombergApple has relaunched the idea of displaying advertisements in its mapping and route application, a direct competitor of Google Maps. The idea had already been mentioned in 2022, but the firm had not taken action. This time, the project was mentioned during an internal meeting – no calendar or concrete work has yet been launched, but if the subject returned to the table, it is that the idea seduces again internally.
In principle, it would be a question of integrating sponsored ads into the search results. For example, a restaurant could pay to appear suggestions when a user is looking for “burger” or “sushi”. This is exactly the model that Google Maps is already used successfully.
Apple has taken a long time to make a credible alternative to Google Maps, the application today has a more refined design and has improved significantly. But could the arrival of advertisements harm its user experience? Asking the question is already a bit answer it …
For Apple, it is above all a question of diversifying its income. The iPhone still generates most of the company’s turnover, but the services (Apple Music, iCloud, App Store, etc.) are increasingly strategic. By displaying ads in plans, Apple could therefore capitalize on an already lucrative sector for Google.
It remains to be seen how users will react. Pubs in Google Maps have become so discreet that you hardly notice them anymore, and it is a problem: they now look like information when they are not at all. Apple could follow the same path, with well -integrated ads that do not overcome the interface too much. But if they become too invasive, they may frustrate the regulars of plans.
For the moment, nothing is acted. But the fact that this Resurgus idea suggests that Apple could well take action in a few months or years. What if plans became an advertising milk cow, like Google Maps? The apple firm would certainly be delighted, probably less users.
