Audio brand BOYA a has launched a super affordable pair of wireless microphones aimed at content creators producing movies on a budget who don’t need or can’t afford a more professional wireless mic solution.
The BOYA Mini consists of two tiny wireless microphones with built-in clothing clips and a foam pop filter. The two mics link to a wireless receiver that plugs into a smartphone via a Lightning or USB port. The kit includes two receivers: one for USB Type C and the other for Apple’s Lightning connector.
The microphones are hardly much bigger than a child’s thumb and they weigh a mere 5g They are so small they can be clipped to a t-shirt or a handbag strap and hardly anyone will notice on screen. BOYA even sells some decorative brooches and pendants and lanyards that can be used to attach to the mics so they won’t even appear on camera.
The BOYA Mini mic system is very affordable considering it uses the 2.4GHz wireless spectrum to connect, that’s the same technology used by pro systems from brands like RØDE and Sennheiser. The BOYA Mini mics offer a 48kHz/16-bit sample rate, which is plenty good enough for most people’s needs and the mics have a frequency response of 20Hz to 20kHz.
The effective range of these little microphones is around 100m line of sight in good conditions. It’s a useful amount of distance and will certainly give you better quality sound than using the phone’s internal mic. You’ll even be able to shoot long shots from 100m away and zoom in while still capturing perfect close-up sound from the presenter’s mic.
The BOYA Mini mic system has an 80dB signal-to-noise ratio and can handle loud sounds up to 120dB SPL, making the BOYA mini suitable for recording vox pops, cooking demonstrations and anything else that needs to be filmed close and mid-shot. The Mini system also includes BOYA’s AI-driven Environmental Noise Cancellation which helps to filter out distracting background sounds which can enhance the audio capture in a range of environments.
For a bit of fun, BOYA has also added three voice modulation modes which are described as Uncle Voice, Female Voice and Normal Voice. Uncle Voice sounds a bit low and creepy but is perfect for disguising a whistleblower’s voice when filming them in silhouette for a documentary. Admittedly, that’s a niche feature but I’m sure someone will have fun with it.
Each of the tiny wireless microphones has enough onboard battery for about six hours of shooting. The charging case which stores the mics and the receiver has enough extra battery charge onboard to take the total amount of filming time to 30 hours before the case needs to be recharged.
You don’t need to use an app to record audio or video when using the Mini microphones, but there is a BOYA smartphone app that can be used for recording and changing settings on the system which is done by connecting the mics using Bluetooth for setting changes.
It’s always wise to ensure that the app you are using to record video or audio is using the BOYA Mini receiver and certain Apple apps will not play ball. Facetime is notoriously fussy about the mic sources it is willing to accept so experiment first before that vital money shot that you really must get right.
The gain level on this wireless mic system is all done automatically. There are no complicated recording levels to set just pair the system once and you are ready to go. Lights on the mics and the receiver indicate when everything is connected. There are noise reduction buttons on each mic and the receiver unit. The instructions for the product are a little sparse so just play and learn how to use it the best way that suits you.
The sound quality of these tiny wireless microphones is surprisingly good. I am not sure they are quite on par with RØDE Wireless Micro or Sennheiser’s new Wireless Profile. However, what they do for the money, is good and certainly more than good enough for most people producing content for social media posts.
Verdict: The BOYA Mini Wireless Microphone System is an ideal tool for content creators, streamers and even podcasters. This versatile system will give an instant upgrade to sound quality compared with using the mic built into a smartphone. The system is no bigger than a pair of wireless earbuds and small enough to put in a pocket so you always have it with you. If you want to test whether wireless mics would be a good idea for your content, then the price of the BOYA Mini is hard to beat.
Pricing & Availability: The BOYA Mini is priced between $45 and $60 and will be available from November 25 through BOYA’s official online store and select retailers.
