Cambridge Enterprise, the tech transfer office at the University of Cambridge, will open its first-ever London office as it aims to strengthen collaboration and expand its position among global investors and innovators.
The organisation is the commercialisation arm of the prestigious university, responsible for working with founders within the institution to spinout research into viable startup businesses.
Cambridge Enterprise’s London base will be in King’s Cross, positioning it near a handful of major tech firms including the European headquarters of Google, which will be next door to the tech transfer office’s London location.
The group said establishing a physical presence in London would help bridge the gap between the tech hubs, encouraging a smoother flow of talent and investment between them.
“Our new London office represents a strategic investment in Cambridge innovation and entrepreneurialism,” said Jim Glasheen, chief executive of Cambridge Enterprise.
“By establishing this base in King’s Cross, we aim to increase engagement with national and international players, from investors to partners, whilst creating new pathways for our most promising spinouts.
“Cambridge academics and researchers are solving some of the world’s most pressing challenges and this expansion will ensure their breakthroughs can more rapidly reach those who need them most.”
Cambridge has become one of the UK’s most successful technology hubs, alongside London, with its university acting as the country’s most prolific progenitor of spinout companies, according to research from Beauhurst.
Last year saw Cambridge’s second-best year on record for venture capital investment, with firms from the city raising £1.7bn in 2024, according to research from Dealroom and Founders at the University of Cambridge.
