OpenAI has made a jump to the web with the launch of ChatGPT Atlas, a browser that integrates ChatGPT and that allows you to use the possibilities of the chatbot as an intelligent assistant while performing searches.
With Atlas, ChatGPT will be available on any website your users are on, to assist them with various tasks in the window they are in at all times. You’ll also understand what they want to do and be able to perform tasks on their behalf, without having to copy and paste data or leave the page they’re on.
The memory of the conversations that users have with ChatGPT in their account will be integrated into the browser, so that the assistant will have context and information from past chats, as well as details of them, which will make it easier for them to carry out tasks.
Additionally, as Atlas is used, ChatGPT will become more intelligent, so it will become more useful the more the browser is used. In addition, what is “learned” by the browser during navigation will allow ChatGPT to remember the context of the pages that are visited, and save said context for when it is needed. This means that Atlas and ChatGPT users can ask the chatbot questions outside the browser, and ask it to use content and elements from the websites visited with Atlas.
Of course, incorporating browser knowledge into Atlas is completely optional, and the user can control what is archived and what is not. So, you can review these browser memories, view them or archive them, for which you have different options at your disposal in the Atlas settings. It is also possible to clear your browsing history, which removes associated browser memories.
ChatGPT can also be used within Atlas. To do this, you only need to activate agent mode, which incorporates improvements that make it more agile and useful. Among other things, thanks to the fact that it is capable of working with the navigation context. In addition, it offers improvements in research and analysis, task automation, event planning or appointment booking. All while browsing. Of course, agent mode is only available for users of the Plus, Pro and Business payment plans. For now, in the testing phase.
ChatGPT Atlas is now available for MacOS and users of ChatGPT’s free, Plus, Pro and Go plans. Atlas is also available in a trial version for the Business plan, and if activated by the plan administrator, for Enterprise and Edu users. The company has assured that Atlas for Windows, iOS and Android will be available soon.
How Atlas works
To start using it, you only need to enter the ChatGPT user account data when opening the browser. Atlas is also capable of importing bookmarks, browsing history and passwords stored in other browsers. To use it, simply type a URL in the navigation bar, or ask Atlas a question. To explore more specific results, simply choose tabs to find search links, images, videos or news.
ChatGPT can remember the websites visited and suggest what to do at any given time: return to pages already viewed, delve deeper into a topic, show related ideas or automate routine tasks. The user can control their browsing, and decide from deleting their history to opening an incognito window to temporarily disconnect from ChatGPT.
Activating browsing memories will make ChatGPT remember key details of the content visited to improve chat responses and offer smarter suggestions. Browsing through these memories is private for the ChatGPT account in which they are stored, yes. You can see them in the configuration settings, archive those that are not relevant and keep those that are.
Additionally, even if memories are activated, you can decide which sites ChatGPT can and cannot see. When the Atlas user decides that they cannot view a website, ChatGPT will not have access to its content, and they will not create memories of it.
OpenAI has assured that, by default, they do not use the content of the websites visited with Atlas to train their models, but that users can decide to activate the option that allows it. By doing so you will also be able to choose which pages you can or cannot use for this.
In case the training option is activated for ChatGPT account chats, the training option will also be activated with Atlas chats. This includes website content integrated by users using the Ask ChatGPT sidebar, as well as browsing memories that inform chats.
Atlas will also have parental controls, and if a parent has activated them in ChatGPT, these settings will also be carried over to conversations with ChatGPT in the browser. In addition, Atlas will have new parental controls, with which you can even deactivate browser memories, as well as agent mode.
The browser also incorporates ChatGPT Agent, which works natively in it to perform tasks on behalf of the user. Of course, only in the Plus, Pro and Business plans. On the other hand, ChatGPT, for security reasons, cannot execute code in the browser. Neither download files nor install extensions. You also cannot access other apps on the computer or the file system.
It will pause to ensure that you review the actions it takes in especially sensitive sites, such as financial and banking institutions. Besides, The agent can be used without connecting any user account to limit your access to sensitive data, as well as to avoid the risk of making decisions for the user while browsing.
