The digiKam 8.7 professional photo management software has been released for this KDE/Qt-aligned open-source solution for digital photography.
Similar to prior digiKam releases working on new AI features, that AI work has continued with digiKam 8.7. New to digiKam 8.7 is having an AI auto-rotation tool to automate the orientation detection through content analysis using deep learning. This plug-in can then auto-rotate images when deemed necessary.
Another notable improvement for the new version of digiKam is enabling OpenCL and CUDA acceleration support within its OpenCV framework usage. The NVIDIA CUDA support relies on the cuDNN SDK.
The digiKam 8.7 release also brings improvements to its face management handling, various bug fixes, and other enhancements. Moving forward, digiKam is looking at more AI usage such as for a large language model (LLM) for providing a natural language interface for searching pictures.
