A few weeks before its release, the series Win or Lose (Won or lose in French) is experiencing a significant turnaround. Revolving around a mixed softball team, the animated creation must tell the daily life of these children a few days before they play an important championship match. A dive into adolescence and the sporting world, a whole program for what is announced as the latest Pixar series offered on Disney+. She promised to make people talk about her even more, Win or Lose was to be the first production Pixar mentioned trans identity. This Monday, Disney informed the actress lending her voice to the character concerned that any reference to her gender transition had been removed.
In 2020, Pixar is launching a call for casting. The animation studio is looking for a transgender actress to lend her voice to a queer character. Chanel Stewart, who was just 14 at the time, saw it as the role of a lifetime. She asks her mother if she can participate in the project, she who only had experience in advertising at the time. Chanel Stewart takes on the score, that of a little girl with a gender different from the one assigned to her at birth. She explains to Deadline : “I was exactly what they wanted, which is why it seemed so right. It seemed so right”. She confided to the American media that she wore this character with pride.
“The idea of authentically representing a transgender teenager made me really happy. I wanted to do it for transgender children like me.”
Except that, a few months before the release of the series on Disney+, the company changed its mind and removed any mention of the character’s transidentity. If the actress does not say more about the role entrusted to her, she specifies that it continues to exist but that this part has simply been deleted. The few lines of dialogue mentioned there no longer exist, Chanel Stewart now lends her voice to a “a cisgender girl, a cisgender and heterosexual girl”. After the publication of the article The Hollywood Reporterwhich was the first media to report this change, Chanel Stewart says “discouraged”. She adds: “I knew it would be an important debate. Transgender stories matter and they deserve to be heard”.

“Discuss certain topics on their own terms”
Asked about this turnaround, a Disney spokesperson explained that it was about letting parents decide how and when they wanted to talk about transidentity.
“When it comes to content aimed at young audiences, we recognize that many parents would prefer to discuss certain topics with their children on their own terms and schedule.”.
Note that this withdrawal comes at a time when the question of transidentity is at the heart of debates in the sporting world. A few months ago, sportswoman Imane Khelif was the target of conservative and openly transphobic personality, they accused her of taking advantage “significant advantage” over its competitors. The boxer has always denied having ever been a man. It remains to be seen how the disappearance of the plot on the transgender character will impact the story of Win or Lose. The appointment is made for February 19 on Disney+.
