DJI follows the pace set by GoPro and it is every year, a few days or weeks after GoPro’s announcements, that DJI unveils its new action camera. After a somewhat conceptual test with the Action 2, DJI has since returned to a more classic format, in direct competition with GoPro and trying to always offer the best on the market, and this, with a more competitive Price. Here is the new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro and no, we are not entitled to a non-Pro model for the moment, but we have no doubt that DJI is preparing an even more accessible version, especially when we see the competition with the new Hero at GoPro or the GO 3s at Insta360.
“By combining the image quality of a professional camera with the rugged durability of an action camera, we continue to innovate and set new standards for the industry,” said Paul Pan, Product Line Manager at DJI. “Creators have evolved, becoming more sophisticated in the stories they tell and the moments they capture. Rather than making incremental improvements, we are focused on advancing the entire action camera category and evolving with these creators.”
Two screens are always better
Offering two screens is not new since the Osmo Action 3 but this year, DJI offers two OLED screens while the competition only offers IPS. But that’s not all, both screens are touchscreen! So, no need to turn the action camera over or have a screen that flips. So yes, the user interface adapts to the front screen but from our first tests, everything is perfectly usable. It should also be noted that these are relatively bright screens with a maximum of 1000 nits.
We will also note the presence of 3 microphones with stereo recording and wind noise reduction. But we are now in 2024 and as for the DJI Osmo Pocket 3, the Osmo Action 5 Pro can accommodate up to two DJI Mic 2 microphones, which allows for a cleaner sound, especially when you know the quality and versatility of the DJI Mic 2.
A new sensor and a new dynamic range
GoPro has optimized its sensor and Insta360 has hit hard with its Ace Pro which stands out with its low light performance that is most impressive for an action camera. Also, DJI had to innovate with a new generation 1/1.4 inch sensor. DJI promises a dynamic range of up to 13.5 stops.
As expected, videos can be captured in 10-bit D-Log M. In terms of resolution, we find 4K120 for classic videos and 4K60 for HDR videos. But that’s not all, like Insta360, the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers a SuperNight mode for filming in low light conditions and with the help of AI to reduce digital noise.
A new battery
Yes, DJI continues to pay attention to improving the autonomy of its products. Also, the new DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro offers a new larger 1950 mAh battery. With this new battery and the optimizations made by DJI, the Chinese manufacturer promises an autonomy of up to 4 hours of use, almost double what the competition offers. At -20 ° C, DJI promises an autonomy of up to 3.6 hours. There is even a function that can provide up to 2 hours of filming from a charge of only 15 minutes with a charger of 30W or more.
Underwater is the best
Next to it, we obviously find the portrait format and the magnetic attachment system from the Action 2 which allows you to quickly switch between landscape mode and portrait mode via its plastic cage supplied as standard. We would have preferred, given the sensor, to have the possibility of being able to film in portrait mode without having to turn the camera like with GoPro.
This year, the Osmo Action 5 Pro is waterproof up to 20m, the deepest waterproof depth on the market today. The built-in color temperature sensor allows for color adjustment at depth. The camera can also be set to start recording automatically when submerged and stop after surfacing. It also has a built-in pressure gauge to record depth, duration, and depth data underwater to ensure user safety.
