As we head toward Christmas, shoppers should prepare for a retail blackout, with Dollar General the latest retailer confirming closure.
All 19,000 stores will shut down for 24 hours in the coming weeks – and you won’t be able to go to Walmart instead.

They’re just two of many retailers shutting up shop for Christmas Day, along with Costco, Target and Trader Joe’s, among others.
We may have waved bye-bye to Black Friday, but the next shopping season is well underway, with thousands of Americans snapping up Christmas gifts for friends and loved ones.
The run up to the holidays is the busiest time of the year, despite store closures on Christmas day as retailers join in the festivities.
Those expecting to leave their holiday buys until the very last minute will be disappointed as Dollar General is shutting its doors across the country, giving its staff a very welcome day off.

The key to a successful holiday is advance planning and the easiest way to do that is to finish Christmas shopping on Christmas Eve at the latest.
Generally speaking, Dollar General is open from 8 am until 9pm, giving a full 13 hours each day for shopping.
In a helpful move, the discount chain is even staying open until 10 pm on Christmas Eve, so consumers have time to pick up urgent purchases just hours before the big day.
However, make sure to check local store hours, as opening times do vary according to where you live.
The chain will also be open on New Year’s Day, though will likely be operating with reduced hours.
Again, check with your local store for its opening times.
CHRISTMAS CLOSURES
Dollar General isn’t the only chain that’s closing for Christmas Day.
Other major corporations, such as Walmart, Target, Macy’s, Kohl’s and The Home Depot will also be taking the day off to celebrate the holidays.
Many grocery stores will also close their doors, including Trader Joe’s, Costco, Aldi, Winn Dixie and Sam’s Club.
Happily, for anybody in need of a super last-minute gift or missing an essential ingredient for Christmas lunch, there will be a few stores open on December 25.
These include Walgreens, Giant, Wawa, Circle K, QuickChek and Bravo Supermarkets.
Casey’s General Store, CVS, 7-Eleven and Safeway will also be accessible to shoppers.
