Is your computer a digital hoarder? Here’s everything you need to know about outdated programs and how to get rid of them. Not only will you experience a faster and smoother system, but also better security.
Why does software become outdated?
We often overlook the digital clutter piling up in our systems, including outdated apps and forgotten tools. One type of junk that deserves special attention is outdated programs, which have reached the end of their lifespan and may no longer receive developer support. While it may still work, its use is discouraged in favor of newer versions or alternative solutions.
You may remember apps like Adobe Flash Player or older versions of Java, which in their prime were essential for the everyday Internet user. However, as technology evolves, so does software, and some programs simply cannot keep up with current standards. Eventually they lose support and stop receiving updates, causing them to become outdated.
There are several other reasons why software can become outdated. Another reason is the costs. Software involves ongoing labor costs; every feature must be maintained, updated and monitored by humans. As the codebase becomes more complex, the risk of bugs, compatibility, and performance are also affected. Every single change in growing features just gets harder to execute, and you need more people to do it.
Why outdated programs pose security risks
The term obsolete is derived from the Latin verb deprecari, meaning “to ward off disaster” through prayer, which I think fits well enough. I don’t recommend keeping old software, even for nostalgic reasons, as it can become a security liability.
Software that no longer receives updates (or security patches) runs the risk of leaving your front door open. You’ve essentially given hackers an easy invitation.
Because outdated programs are usually not updated, they lack the security patches needed to fix vulnerabilities exploited by new security threats. They can become a goldmine for hackers as known exploits go unaddressed, leaving your computer exposed.
In addition to security issues, old software can become incompatible with modern programs, leading to a large number of errors and even a slow computer with poor performance.
How to identify and remove outdated software
To identify and remove outdated software, you can manually scan through all installed programs and search online for each one to see if it is outdated or unsupported.
If this is too much work, or you prefer a more automated method, you can use a third-party tool like Patch My PC, which can scan your computer and display a list of programs that are outdated or unsupported .
Outdated programs often show signs that they cannot be updated, that they cannot be installed on newer systems, or that they seem very glitchy. Some may contain a warning sign informing you that the software is now outdated or no longer supported. A quick online search for the latest version of the program will also confirm whether it is still supported by the developers. Once you have found the outdated programs, it is time to safely remove them.
Before uninstalling any software, make sure that all data associated with the outdated software is backed up. Whether it concerns project files, settings or old work data, it is better to be safe than sorry.
To do this manually, click the Windows Start Menu (or press Windows+i as a shortcut) and search for Programsand press Enter.
Here you will see a list of software installed on your computer. You can even sort installed programs by installation date, which can be used to view older software:
You can click the three-dot menu next to the software you want to remove and then click Uninstall to remove it:
Ensuring that your Windows computer is clean and free of outdated and outdated software makes a significant difference not only to the speed of your computer, but also to your overall security. It’s worth taking a moment to assess which software has outlived its welcome and may now be doing more harm than good.
