Home energy company PSE&G is offering free pick up, haul-away, and disposal for old refrigerators and/or freezers.
The appliances must still be functioning in order to be part of the drive to boost responsible recycling.
If your appliances qualify, PSE&G will give a $100 rebate per item.
With those savings on your energy costs, that’s an extra $100 to spend on the dream kitchen you want or on anything else that has your eye.
There is also an additional rebate available of $35.
This is only if the company can take away a functioning air conditioner or dehumidifier at the same time.
The $35 rebate is paid per appliance but is only available when they are already picking up refrigerators or freezers.
“PSE&G cannot perform a pickup for only room air conditioners or dehumidifiers on their own,” the company notes.
“If you’re ready to say goodbye to your outdated refrigerator or freezer and to start saving more on your energy costs, PSE&G’s Appliance Recycling Program makes it easy with free pickup, haul-away, and disposal,” they added.
To take part in the program, all you have to do is schedule a free pickup either online or by calling PSE&G.
The program is only open to current customers of the home energy firm who get residential electric service.
Butler Electric customers who get PSE&G residential gas service can also take part.
The refrigerators and freezers must be functioning and between 10 and 30 cubic feet to be eligible for the haul away service and rebate.
All rebates will be paid by PSE&G via a check.
Meanwhile, there is a simple seal test you can do on your refrigerator with a dollar bill that could see you save up on your energy bills.
Last month, the US Department of Energy revealed their top hacks to cut your energy bills by up to 30%.
4 ways to keep your energy bills low
Laura Court-Jones, Small Business Editor at Bionic shared her tips.
1. Turn your heating down by one degree
You probably won’t even notice this tiny temperature difference, but what you will notice is a saving on your energy bills as a result. Just taking your thermostat down a notch is a quick way to start saving fast. This one small action only takes seconds to carry out and could potentially slash your heating bills by £171.70.
2. Switch appliances and lights off
It sounds simple, but fully turning off appliances and lights not in use can reduce your energy bills, especially in winter. Turning off lights and appliances when not in use can save you up to £20 a year on your energy bills.
3. Install a smart meter
Smart meters are a great way to keep control over your energy use, largely because they allow you to see where and when your gas and electricity is being used.
4. Consider switching energy supplier
No matter how happy you are with your current energy supplier, they may not be providing you with the best deals, especially if you’ve let a fixed-rate contract expire without arranging a new one. If you haven’t browsed any alternative tariffs lately, then you may not be aware that there are better options out there.
They revealed on their blog that kitchen appliances are the most likely to guzzle up energy and drive up your bills.
The department wrote: “Your kitchen contains a host of energy-using appliances and there are ways to reduce their energy use.
As well as sharing several handy hacks to save on energy, there was a genuis tip on how to test the seal on your refrigerators.
The energy pros also suggest a savvy hack to ensure your refrigerator doors are sealed tight.
You can test this out in a matter of seconds by using a dollar bill.
Close the door with a piece of paper or a dollar bill so it is half in and half out of the refrigerator.
If you can pull the paper or bill out easily, the latch may need adjustment, the seal may need replacing, or you may consider buying a new unit.
