Very rare thing, we are already offering you a handle even before the official announcement which will not arrive until November 19. And it’s not even a leak, it’s all official. It is therefore on the occasion of Snapdragon Summit 2024 what Qualcomm presented with great fanfare its brand new SoC for high-end and premium smartphones for the end of 2024 and for the coming year 2025.
So, among the partners for the launch, although we obviously find many brands, Asus was present at the event but while other brands only teased the arrival of their next flagship smartphones, Asus came with first versions of its future Asus ROG Phone 9 which will therefore be the very first gaming smartphone with a SoC Snapdragon 8 Elite.
And as you might expect, the Asus ROG Phone 9 and the new Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC form a duo which, in terms of performance, is likely to be impressive. We can’t wait to try it. Indeed, Qualcomm does not hesitate to compare its new SoC to desktop computers and according to the first comparisons to the competition, the Snapdragon 8 Elite is much faster than Apple’s new A18. Obviously, we’re waiting to see but it seems promising and it’s really good to now have Android smartphones as powerful as iPhones.
With these first versions of the Asus ROG Phone 9, everything was blocked, obviously. We could not launch any application in order to prevent us, nice journalists, from being able to access by any means whatever the technical characteristics of the device such as the RAM or the internal memory, the hardware characteristics of the screen or even the photo block or even test the new cooling system. In short, we remained limited to the design of the device itself. We were still told half-heartedly that many things have changed, such as the screen or the photo block. We can’t wait to find out more.
So, for the design, we are both surprised or not surprised to actually find a design very similar to its predecessor, the Asus ROG Phone 8 (see our test HERE). And to be honest, the Asus representatives on site made it clear to us that the chassis was the same, which is why we find a similar photo block and frosted glass back. Speaking of the back, there is a small evolution with a Dot Matrix grid that we are starting to find almost everywhere on ROG products. This allows you to accentuate the clear and futuristic design while maintaining a certain discretion.
Apart from that, we find a full screen with a punch at the top center of the screen. We also find the sensitive side buttons, Air Triggers, on the right edge of the smartphone. There are also two USB-C ports, one on the left edge of the smartphone and another on the bottom edge of the smartphone. The latter is slightly offset and can cause problems with certain accessories such as controllers from other brands.
