A LEADING futurist has revealed his predictions for how British homes will transform over the next 30 years.
Brainy Brit and future-gazer Tom Cheesewright reckons AI will be locking our doors for us – and we’ll having glowing walls instead of lightbulbs.

He’s even predicted the death of the plug socket.
Instead, all of the gadgets around your home will be charged wirelessly by 2065.
Wireless charging already exists, but it’s mostly being used for smartphones these days – although Porsche did recently unveil an electric Cayenne that powers up just by parking over a pad.
He also thinks many of your kitchen appliances will become integrated into the surfaces – and become totally invisible.
For instance, the hob could be concealed beneath the worktop.
And eventually an AI could control most of your home’s functions, like heating, lighting, and even the doors.
He even thinks homes will have personal power plants, so every house can generate and store its own energy.
“Homes are set to get even smarter and more sustainable,” said futurist Tom Cheesewright.
“Soon, your kitchen hob could be hidden in the worktop.
“Your wallpaper could light up instead of bulbs, and your house could generate and store all of its own energy.
“AI will run it all in the background, adjusting everything from heating to lighting so life just works around you.”
The predictions are part of Hive’s Home Report 2025, which reveals that houses are increasingly upgrading with smart thermostats, EV chargers, and solar panels.
It reports that many homeowners still think the tech is too expensive, but notes that there’s “growing uptake” among Brits.
Hive’s report also looks back at the 1995 TV programme Tomorrow’s World.

It imagined 2025 as a world occupied by floating holograms, robotic surgeons, and microchips under our skin that we use for banking.
Many of the predictions have come true,
“It’s fascinating to look back at the predictions we made on Tomorrow’s World and see just how many have come to life,” said Maggie Philbin, former Tomorrow’s World presenter.
“We imagined homes of 2025 featuring voice-controlled devices, domestic robots, and walls that doubled as screens.

“But the most successful prediction has been the rise of energy-saving technology.”
She noted that Brits are happy to bag eco-tech gadgets in the home – like smart thermostats that can be controlled via an app – if they “can see real, everyday cost benefits”.
And that’s echoed in the Hive Home Report 2025.
“The confidence to adopt energy-saving tech comes down to good, old-fashioned financial common sense,” said Hive director Tom Pakenham.
FUTURIST’S PREDICTIONS
Here are five predictions for the future of British homes from futurist Tom Cheesewright…
Invisible kitchens: Hobs integrated into worktops for seamless design.
Lighting wallpaper: Glowing walls and ceilings instead of bulbs.
AI-powered living: Homes that adjust heating, lighting and doors automatically.
The end of the plug: Fewer 3-pin sockets, with wireless charging instead.
Personal power plants: Every home generating and storing its own energy.

“Households will invest if it helps them save – and early adopters say it does.”
