Google is making it easier to get specific Gemini tasks done on Workspace apps. It is making Gems available directly in the side panel of Google Docs, Drive, Gmail, Sheets, and Slides.
Gems have been available on the Gemini app and website since last year. They are custom versions of Gemini that you can create to act as experts on specific tasks. You can give it instructions, a name, and then use it whenever you want, without needing to type the same prompt over and over again.
For example, if you need to create a writing editor, you can add notes for the tone, language expertise, and purpose in the instructions and even add files that your Gem can use as reference. Then, every time you use that Gem, it will provide responses tailored to your needs. Default Gems include Coding Partner, Brainstormer, Career Guide, and Learning Coach.

Now, Gems created or available in your Gemini account will appear in the side panel of Workspace apps, allowing you to use the custom chatbots without leaving the app you’re working on.

Leverage a copywriting Gem to create posts and content tailored to your target audience, pre-loaded into the Gem.

Create a Gem that helps with sales interactions that is grounded on information for a specific company, prospect, or industry.

Leverage an “assistant gem” tailored to your job role to help provide more relevant summaries for you and content for internal communications.

Leverage a Gem designed to help pressure test content from a certain persona (for example, C-Suite or CEO) to help you create the most compelling message.

Gems in the side panel will also be able to use Workspace functions like @ mentioning, accessing files, folders, and more, Google says. To create a new Gem, though, you’ll have to head to the Gemini website.
The feature began rolling out on July 2, but it might take more than two weeks for it to hit your account. It’s available for Google Workspace customers who have access to Gemini in the side panel and Gems in the Gemini app, which means you need to be on a Standard Workspace plan or better to use the feature.
