India’s digital economy is running at a breakneck speed and it turns out 2024 has been the groundbreaking year. In a recent report from Google, the company generated a whopping Rs 4 lakh crore revenue in 2024 via its two products including Google Play and Android ecosystem. This revenue is generated for Indian publishers and the country’s broader economy.
But this earning is just one part of the story and hence the second part is the emergence of the Android ecosystem as a powerful enabler, not just supporting millions of jobs, but also giving access to essential services. Additionally, Android is also driving innovation in artificial intelligence as a whole.
Google made its revenue announcement at its annual developer conference I/O Connect India 2025 which signifies company’s deep commitment toward India’s digital future.
Google Play:
In this conference, Google announced that India has been the second largest contributor in terms of active developers on Google Play globally. In 2024, Indian developers contributed to over 10 lakh jobs across direct as well as indirect employment. Google Play is becoming a catalyst for India’s economic as well asocial empowerment with the help of Android ecosystem.
According to Google, around 35 lakh jobs were supported across various sectors due to this ecosystem. And a significant portion of that is tied to the exponential growth in app-based services. From fintech and healthtech to edtech and entertainment, everything depend heavily on Android platforms for their reach and scalability.
What Statistics Say:
Google revealed in the conference that Android has become India’s digital journey and hence nearly 72% of Indian users reported that their first interaction with the internet happened on an Android device. This early usage of internet on Android device showcases that how Android helped Indian users to engage with digital services today. Even more happening news is that 85% of users mentioned that their Android phone is one of the primary tools to access digital public services including Aadhar, UPI, and other government platforms.
Furthermore, 69% of Indians were introduced to artificial intelligence through apps on their Android devices, highlighting Android’s pivotal role in India’s emerging AI literacy. Equally notable is Android’s affordability edge which is its open-source model that has enabled Indian OEMs to save an estimated Rs 25,200 crore in development and operational costs.
