Las French authorities have closed the purchase of 100% of Atos’ supercomputing and quantum computing division, Bull. Announced last July 2025 for 404 million euros, this operation represents an advance in technological sovereignty, both French and European. Especially in high performance computing, AI and quantum technologies.
Today, Bull, until recently a division of Atos since its purchase about 12 years ago, is a company specializing in the design and manufacture of supercomputers and high-performance computing servers. It also deals with the development of software solutions, AI for specific use cases and various innovations in the quantum computing sector.
It has a long history in the field of research and development in the aforementioned areas, and also operates the only supercomputer manufacturing plant in Europe, in the French town of Angers.
The supercomputers developed there cover the needs of different areas of the country’s national defense, as well as industry and basic research. They are also essential for training and deploying AI models, and stand out for their performance and energy efficiency.
This purchase is part of an ambitious strategy to advance high-performance computing in Europe, and in particular in France; and arrives practically at the same time as the presentation of France’s next supercomputer, Alice Recoque, which will be used to strengthen the country’s capabilities in simulation, AI and processing of large amounts of data.
Bull has more than 3,000 employees and experts, half of whom are in France.
