Just hours after the release of the new GTA 5 update on PC, adding BattlEye, an anti-cheat system to improve the gaming experience on GTA Online, Steam removes the “game optimized” label for the Steam Deck. According to Rockstar Games, the BattlEye does not would not be compatible with Steam’s portable machine, but what is it really like?
GTA V is no longer compatible with the Steam Deck
GTA V is undoubtedly one of the most popular titles of the Steam Deck. In fact, it is continually in the top 20 most played games for over two years. However, for two days and the publication of the latest update, Grand Theft Auto V (and therefore GTA Online) no longer has their label support and therefore optimization of the Steam Deck. Now, both games are considered as “not supported”.
Rockstar Games blames Valveclaiming that “Steam Deck does not support BattlEye for GTA Online”. The problem? BattlEye, the anti-cheat system used by Rockstar Games on GTA Online et well and truly compatible with the Steam Deck for several months now and there are a number of games that have anti-cheat software that have successfully made the move.
So, the problem would come from Rockstar which simply wouldn’t have bothered to enable the settings which allows BattlEye anti-cheat to work on the Steam Deck.
Contacted by our colleagues from The VergeValve responded by confirming that: “Activating a game with BattlEye on the Steam Deck is literally as easy as sending an email”. For its part, Rockstar did not respond to The Verge’s questions about the situation.
Since the deployment of BattlEye on Monday, the number of players in GTA Online on PC dropped by 40% going from an average from 140,000 concurrent users to 84,000 users. This drop (which is at its lowest for almost 9 years and the launch of GTA Online on PC) is explained by the BattlEye which disables many mods including the Kiddions menu modwhich allows you to easily manage mods, is no longer functional.
