It’s now official: Warner Bros is indeed exploring the idea of filming a feature film related to the universe of Game of Thrones, the legendary saga of George RR Martin. But be careful not to get carried away too quickly, because the deal is still far from being concluded.
This information, initially revealed by the Hollywood Reporter last week, was confirmed this Tuesday during a press conference hosted by Casey Bloys, director of HBO and Max. However, he made it clear that the project was still in its infancy, and that the public should moderate its expectations for the moment.
“When we announce at HBO that we are developing this or that story, keep in mind that it is only in development. We have two series right now in the world of Game of Thrones. I think the film follows this same idea”, cite Premiere.
More than just a cash grab?
However, he seems enthusiastic about this prospect. For him, it could be a relevant idea and likely to bring real added valuebeyond the simple fact of continuing to milk a franchise which has become an incomparable goose that lays golden eggs following the global success of the series.
“I think it could be fun and interesting. This is the goal of development: is there a story that deserves to be presented in the cinema and in a major show? Why not ! I don’t necessarily look at it from the perspective of a financial hit. I just think it could make a fun and important film. I think there is potential for that”, he insists.
It will therefore be appropriate to follow this project in the hope that it will eventually come to fruition. For the moment, no concrete information has filtered out regarding the people involved in this development process, with one exception: George RR Martin himself.
The universe Game of Thrones continues to expand
Not necessarily good news for those who are still waiting for the conclusion of the literary saga, constantly postponed by this legendary procrastinator. But at least die-hard fans will be able to satisfy their thirst for adventure with A Knight of the Seven Kingdomswhich is expected to be released in 2025.
As a reminder, the few plot scraps already revealed indicate that this second spinoff developed by HBO will follow the wanderings of Ser Duncan, an imposter who usurped the identity of the knight whose squire he was.
In a bad situation after having raised his hand against a prince, he can however count on another character called Egg, to get him out of this bad situation. An act of bravery which will mark the beginning of a colorful relationship, the perfect breeding ground for a story halfway between the buddy-movie and the initiatory story.
