No matter what style of program you dream of, have you thought about turning to anime? Japanese animation is full of gems with perfect themes for Halloween. Whether your mood is more humorous or horror, here are five anime to discover before, during or even after October 31.

If you missed out on this new phenomenon, here’s a chance to catch up. Dan Da Dan it’s one of the latest releases that’s causing a stir among Japanese animation fans. This adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu’s shônen honors the wacky universe of the manga with exquisite animation by the Science Saru studio (Scott Pilgrim takes flight).
We discover the adventures of Momo Ayase, who believes in ghosts but not in aliens, and Ken Takakura who believes the opposite. Unfortunately for them: these two threats are very real and will turn their daily lives upside down. The anime is available on Netflix, ADN and Crunchyroll, and offers a different French version between the Red N and the specialized platforms, so it’s up to you to make your choice.
Perfect Blue (Crunchyroll)
For Halloween, would you like a little psychological horror? Released in 1998, Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon, adapted from the novel by Yoshikazu Takeuchi, is still considered today as one of the most influential feature films in Japanese animated cinema.
The experts from the Madhouse studio have managed to transcribe the main character’s descent into hell with visuals that are as striking as they are disturbing. By stopping her idol career to become an actress, Mima Kirigoe will live a real nightmare, between her chilling roles on screen and the omnipresent threat of a stalker.
Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun (Crunchyroll)
If you want to discover a story of the spirit that is not scary, we have what you need. Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun is not only a successful manga, it is also an excellent anime that is sure to make you laugh. Released in 2020, this adaptation of Aidalro’s work invites us to discover the adventures of Nene Yashiro, a young girl cursed after asking for help from Hanako-kun, a spirit living in the toilets of her school.
The rest of the manga has not yet been adapted, but it will be soon. Season 2 is preparing its broadcast for January 2025: the Halloween 2024 season is therefore the ideal opportunity to (re)discover this funny series.
Devilman Crybaby (Netflix)
Did you know that the father of Goldorak is also at the origin of one of the best anime of recent years? In the 70s, Gô Nagai forgot robots and giant monsters to publish Devilmana unique story where the human race faces demons. Despite several animated adaptations broadcast over the years, it was not until the Science Saru studio’s attempt in 2018 that the work was talked about again.
Devilman Crybaby tells the story of Akira Fudo, a man with demonic powers of unlikely origins. After discovering that the demons are back on Earth and determined to take it back, the protagonist will merge with Amon, the Lord of Demons, and obtain his abilities while managing to retain his heart and his humanity. Akira then becomes the last shield between these creatures and men.
Little Witch Academia (Netflix)
Kill la Kill, Brand New Animal, Cyberpunk : Edgerunners… Perhaps you have already devoured all the anime from studio Trigger, known for its breathtaking visuals, but have you heard of Little Witch Academia ? Because this story of witches is undoubtedly one of the studio’s most significant projects. The realization of this anime is an atypical journey to say the least, driven by the passion of the spectators.
Little Witch Academia began as a short film produced as part of the Anime Mirai project in 2013. The endearing characters, the colorful visuals and this reminiscent school setting Harry Potter did not fail to impress the fans who wanted to see more. Following a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, a second short film called Little Witch Academia : The Enchanted Parade makes its appearance. We will have to wait until 2017 before discovering a real anime Little Witch Academiadeveloped as a Netflix exclusive.
