Retrospective season is here. After the traditional Wrapped from Spotify, and the less traditional Insights from Pornhub, it’s Google’s turn to take stock of its trends for the year 2024. In France, the year was busy, but two very distinct subjects emerge.
Sport and politics
Faithful to an eventful year in these two areas in particular, France has taken a close interest in sports news in 2024. On the podium of the most searched keywords of the year, we find three major events for thrill-seekers: Euro 2024, the Paris 2024 Olympic Gamesand the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. A winning trio, followed by the major political events of the year, which were the American presidential elections and the legislative elections. This trend is also reflected in the French ranking of the most sought-after personalities, with in first position former Prime Minister Michel Barnier, who had a brief stint in government before his censorship a few weeks ago, but also Gabriel Attal or even Jordan Bardellawhose book recently hit the headlines. Unsurprisingly, Donald Trump is also one of the most sought-after personalities of the year.

French cinema in the spotlight
On the series and cinema side, France has once again demonstrated assumed chauvinism. The ranking of the most searched series gives pride of place to French productions, like the Netflix true crime mini-series Anthracite, which romanticizes the affair of the Order of the Solar Temple (a sect involved in a series of collective suicides in the 1990s), or even Fiasco with Pierre Niney, and Worship, which looks back on the success of Loft and the birth of reality TV in France. In dark rooms, it’s A little something extra et Le Comte de Monte Cristo which assert themselves, the two films having been highly commented upon at the time of their release.

- A little something extra
- Le Comte de Monte Cristo
- Vice-versa 2
- Dune
- Beetlejuice
- Terrifier 3
- Dune 2
- Anatomy of a fall
- Gladiator 2
- Love phew
However, American productions are not forgotten, since we note the success of The Gentlemen and Fallout, two series released this year, as well as Vice Versa 2, Dune and Beetlejuice. The very gory Terrifier 3 is also one of the lucky ones.
Lots of rubbish questions
Obviously, Google is also an opportunity to ask all the existential questions that come to mind. The year 2024 is therefore an opportunity to ask “what is wokism?”, “Why doesn’t he watch my stories anymore?”, “Why were chainsaws invented?”, or even “Where is Mimie Mathy?” Sometimes surprising questions, but often linked to a particular event.

AI, for everything, all the time
Like last year, the web giant also highlighted a category that is now central to Internet users’ browsing habits: artificial intelligence. To make presentations, correct mistakes or generate videos from scratch, like the possibilities offered by Sora in recent days, AI is everywhere, and it promises to establish itself in our daily lives in the long term.
