Winter is supposed to smell like freshly cut grass, a cool breeze, and freshness of breath, however, all we can feel is pollution, pollution, and only pollution. India is home to more than 17% of the world’s population which makes it the world’s second most populous country. If we talk about our national capital Delhi then the population here has increased from 1 million people in 2015 to staggering 28 million people in 2018. With increasing population, growth, and enhancements comes increasing pollution.
It is no exception that for the past 10 years the world is fighting one of the biggest environmental battles of our time. Air pollution has not just increased the AQI from 100 to 500, but it has also significantly impacted our environment and human health. As per research the deaths in 2015 reached to 4.2 million due to the ambient fine particle matter air pollution. However, from past few years, I would not say in total, but up to some extend the technology has proven to be the most promising frontiers in dealing and improving air quality.

In honor of these new technologies, I will discuss some of the best innovations that prove to be actively preventing us from air pollution. In 2019 the Indian government launched the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) for handling air pollution. It is a five-year action plan which mainly focuses on curbing air pollution by building a pan India air quality monitoring network and improving citizen awareness. According to the Ericsson Mobility Report, ICT solutions such as IOT (Internet Of Things) has the capability to reduce greenhouse gas emission by up to 15% by 2030.
Areas where ICT can make an impact include transportation, electricity grids, manufacturing, agriculture and land use. In addition, as ICT is a carbon-lean sector that accounts for less than 2% of global CO2 emissions, it presents a viable means for cities and countries to reduce their carbon footprints.
Technologies That Can Improve Air Quality:
Renewable Energy:
Renewable Energy is one of the biggest savior in controlling air pollution with sources like solar, wind, and hydro power. Moreover, shifting away from Fossil Fuels can significantly help us in reducing the air pollution generated by traditional power plants. Solar energy, in particular, has vast potential in India, making it an ideal solution. Wind energy is another significant resource, especially in coastal areas. Hydroelectric power has a long history in India, and biomass energy can utilize abundant agricultural waste and forestry residues.
Electric Vehicles:
In comparison with traditional vehicles that run on Petrol and Diesel, Electric Vehicles doesn’t produce tailpipe emissions, including nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbons (HC). Electric Vehicle’s use regenerative braking in order to convert the energy from a moving vehicle into electric that helps in charging the battery. In addition, they are conveniently quieter than conventional vehicles.
Multi-Pollutant Monitoring Devices
While this technology doesn’t directly reduce air pollution or control air pollution, it’s still a crucial part of the air pollution control system. These devices help government and regulatory bodies who are responsible for controlling air pollution to analyze pollution sources are meeting emission limits for multiple pollutants. These devices help in identifying harmful pollutant sources, including industrial smokestacks or automobiles.
Scrubbers
Scrubbers are a distinguish type of pollution control device that helps in removing air pollutants like sulfur dioxide, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and hydrogen chloride from industrial exhaust. There are two types of scrubbers-Wet and Dry. Wet scrubber use water to absorb particles or gases from air. However, dry scrubbers devices spray dry reagents into the flue stream, neutralizing gases before they can enter the atmosphere.
Conclusion:
Technological advancements and use of technology has proven to be one of the best way to reduce and control air pollution. It is transforming the way we take, manage, and mitigate air quality. From IOT devices to advanced sensor monitors, these technologies are optimizing emission reduction and coming up with innovative solutions to this serious environmental issue.
