Have you ever noticed how some online stores seem to read your mind when suggesting products? You’re looking at a camera, and suddenly, they’re showing you the perfect lens, memory card, and camera bag to go with it.
This isn’t magic – it’s a powerful marketing strategy called “frequently bought together” products.
We use a similar approach for selling our Thrive Themes suite. When someone considers buying a single plugin, we show the complete suite next to it. This way, they can see how much more value they could get for their money.
In our experience, this strategy is super effective in driving sales and boosting the average order value (AOV).
So, in this guide, we’ll show you several ways to add frequently bought together products in WooCommerce. Whether you want a simple solution or advanced features, we’ll cover methods that work for every budget and skill level.
Where Should You Show Frequently Bought Together Products in Your Online Store?
Want to boost your store’s sales? Adding frequently bought together products is a great way to do it. Studies show that product recommendations can bring in up to 31% of your online store’s income.
The best places to show these personalized recommendations are:
- Product Page – When customers are actively researching items, it’s the perfect time to show frequently bought together products and product recommendations that complement their main interest.
- Shopping Cart Page – Customers reviewing their carts are already committed to buying, making them more open to cross-selling suggestions. The bought together model works especially well here.
- Checkout Page – This is your final opportunity to increase the average order value. This approach works like those tempting supplementary products that you can find near a physical store’s checkout counter.
- Smart Popups – These can appear at any point in the shopping journey. They can target customers based on their browsing behavior and cart contents.
Now, keep reading to learn how to show these recommendations in WooCommerce!
How to Show Frequently Bought Together Products in WooCommerce
WooCommerce gives you several ways to set up the frequently bought together model. So, you might be wondering which one is best for your needs.
Here’s what you should know.
The simplest approach is using WooCommerce’s built-in linked product feature, which won’t cost you anything extra or require any new plugins.
Want more options? FunnelKit’s Funnel Builder might be just what you’re looking for. It lets you create a custom checkout page and/or add a sliding cart that shows frequently bought together products in a way that appeals to customers.
On the other hand, if you like WooCommerce’s linked product feature but want your product suggestions to look better, then you can try the free YITH WooCommerce Frequently Bought Together plugin.
Want to grab attention with popups? OptinMonster is perfect for displaying product recommendations at just the right time. It even lets you target suggestions based on customer reviews and shopping behavior.
Now, ready to learn how to set these up? We’ll show you each method step by step. Use these quick links to jump to the one you want to try:
Method 1: Use WooCommerce’s Linked Products Feature (Free + Simple)
Let’s start by heading to Products » Add new product in your WordPress dashboard to create a new product. Or, you can edit one you already have to set up your frequently bought together products.
If you need help with adding a new product, then just read our WooCommerce made simple guide.
Now, scroll down and look for the ‘Product data’ section. Then, click on the ‘Linked Products’ tab on the left.
This is where you can create your product recommendations.
You have two ways to show related products. The ‘Upsells’ section lets you display frequently bought together bundles right on your product page.
If enabled, you will see a ‘You may also like…’ section below your main product information.
The ‘Cross-sells’ section is different. This is where you can suggest complementary items when customers are reviewing their shopping carts.
The products will appear in a ‘You may be interested in…’ section below your list of orders.
For both sections, just type in the name of any product you want to suggest and pick from the search results that pop up.
At this stage, you can continue setting up your WooCommerce product. For example, you can:
When you’re happy with your WooCommerce frequently bought together setup, just hit ‘Publish’ or ‘Update’ at the top of the page to save everything.
Method 2: Use FunnelKit Funnel Builder (Custom Carts & Checkouts)
FunnelKit is a powerful sales builder that lets you create custom shopping experiences in WooCommerce. We’ve used it many times in our own tutorials, like when showing how to create custom thank-you pages.
We love recommending FunnelKit to our readers because it gives you more control over how and where you show product suggestions. You can read our detailed FunnelKit Funnel Builder review to see why the pro version is our pick for creating high-converting shopping experiences.
That said, there are two smart ways to show product suggestions with FunnelKit. The first is a sliding cart that follows your customers as they browse your store.
When someone adds an item to their cart, the sliding shopping cart appears with carefully chosen related products. It’s just like a helpful store assistant making personalized suggestions.
The second method catches customers at checkout using order bumps. This is perfect for last-minute suggestions, similar to those tempting items near a physical store’s checkout counter.
The difference is that you can show items that specifically complement what’s already in the customer’s cart.
You can use both methods together or just implement one of them to increase WooCommerce sales. So, let’s look at each method one by one.
But first things first, there are three WordPress plugins you need to install and activate:
The first two options are free, while the last one requires a premium license. You can’t leave this plugin out because it will enable the features you need to display frequently bought together products.
If you’re not familiar with adding plugins to your site, then check out our beginner’s guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.
Once you have installed and activated all three plugins, you can head to the FunnelKit » Settings page from the admin area. Then, switch to the ‘License’ tab in the left column.
Now, just insert your license key and click the ‘Activate’ and ‘Save Changes’ button. You can get this information from your account on the FunnelKit website.
Option 1: Display Frequently Bought Together Products in the Sliding Cart
First, go to FunnelKit » Cart and turn on the ‘Enable Cart’ switch.
Next, customize how your sliding cart works. You can adjust where the icon sits, whether to show coupons, or tweak your checkout settings.
Want the full details? Check out our guide on setting up a sliding cart in WooCommerce.
Now, click the ‘Upsells’ tab in your left-hand menu and flip the ‘Enable Cart Upsells’ switch to ‘On.’
You’ll see some new options for arranging your product recommendations. You can take a peek at the preview in the top right to see how each layout looks.
Now, next to ‘Product Recommendation Type,’ just choose whether you want to show cross-sells, upsells, or both.
You can also add a catchy heading at the top and pick the maximum number of products you’d like to display.
At this stage, you can scroll down to find all your store’s products listed under ‘Upsells and Cross-Sells.’
Click on any product and hit either ‘Add Upsell’ or ‘Add Cross Sell’ to set up your recommendations.
💡 Expert Note: Upsells are the fancy versions of what’s already in someone’s shopping cart (think regular coffee vs. premium beans). Meanwhile, cross-sells are related items that go well together (like coffee filters with that coffee).
When you click either button, a window pops up where you can search for and pick the products you want to recommend.
Go ahead and do this for as many products as you’d like.
Finally, hit ‘Save’ at the top when you’re done, and you’re all set!
Head over to your WordPress website to see your sliding cart with your product recommendations in action.
Option 2: Display Frequently Bought Together Products in the Checkout Process
If you want to show frequently bought together items during the checkout process, then you need to go to FunnelKit » Store Checkout.
Then, switch to the ‘Store Checkout’ tab and click on the ‘Create Store Checkout’ button.
FunnelKit offers several checkout templates you can customize using the block editor or popular page builder plugins like Divi or Bricks. You can choose your preferred editing platform at the top of the page.
If you want more information on how to modify this template, you can check out our guide on how to customize the WooCommerce checkout page.
After that, click ‘Preview’ on the checkout template you’re interested in.
Most FunnelKit templates include a checkout page, plus upsell and thank you pages to maximize your cross-sell opportunities.
For this tutorial, we will add an order bump to the checkout page and a product offer on the upsell page.
If you’re happy with how the template looks, you can click on the ‘Import This Funnel’ button.
Next, you’ll be asked to give your checkout a name. This helps you track different checkout funnels if you create multiple personalized product recommendation paths.
Then, click ‘Done.’
You can now start adding frequently bought together bundles to your checkout process.
To add the frequently bought together bundle to the checkout page, you can click on the ‘Add Order Bump’ button in the ‘Checkout’ section.
Now, give your order bump a name.
We recommend using something straightforward like ‘Frequently Bought Together Order Bump.’
After you’ve chosen a name, click the ‘Add’ button.
FunnelKit will now show you several design options for your product recommendations.
You can pick one that matches your eCommerce store’s style. After that, click ‘Import.’
In the product selection popup, add the items you want to display as frequently bought together. You can also include product variants to give customers more choices.
When you’re done, simply click ‘Add.’
Now, in the ‘Design’ tab, you can change the order bump’s text and the style.
To change the call-to-action text and the order bump product description, you can switch to the ‘Content’ menu under it.
If you switch to the ‘Style’ menu, you can customize the order bump’s colors, position, layout, and more.
Make sure the design stands out but doesn’t look out of place in your online store.
Once you’re happy with the text and style, you can switch to the ‘Products’ section. This is where you can fine-tune your WooCommerce frequently bought together offerings.
You can add multiple products, set discount percentages, and adjust quantities to create irresistible product bundles.
Also, make sure to enable ‘Add Order Bumps to Cart Items’ so customers can easily add your suggestions to their purchases.
Now, switch to the ‘Rules’ tab. This is where you can get strategic with your related popular products.
Go ahead and click ‘Add Rules’ to begin.
There are various kinds of conditional logic rules you can apply. But since we’re focusing on frequently bought together products, we’ll select ‘Cart Item(s).’ This lets you show specific product recommendations based on what customers already have in their carts.
For the next dropdown, you have a few options.
If you choose ‘contains exactly,’ your suggestions appear only when customers have that specific item in their cart. This makes your recommendations more relevant and likely to convert.
However, you can also choose ‘contains at least’ if you want your suggestions to appear even when customers have additional items in their cart.
For example, if someone has a camera plus other items in their cart, and your order bump is for a camera case, then they’ll still see that order bump at checkout.
Then, in the ‘Products’ field, you can choose which items go together with the order bump. You can also increase the quantity of the products.
Don’t forget to click ‘Save’ to store your changes.
Now, go back to the previous page. Here, scroll down a bit and click ‘No Products’ in the ‘Upsells’ section. This is where you can add an offer that will appear right after the customer completes their checkout information.
On the next page, the plugin will bring you to the ‘Products’ tab.
Here, just click ‘Add Product.’
At this stage, you can type in the name of the product that you want to add as an offer.
Feel free to add as many products as you like.
Then, once you’re done, just click ‘Add.’
Next, you can make your offers more tempting.
You can do this by adjusting the discount percentage, choosing how the discount works, setting up flat shipping rates, and controlling product quantities.
These settings help you create attractive deals that customers can’t resist.
When you scroll down, you’ll find some smart settings to prevent awkward situations. We recommend enabling the ‘Skip this offer if product(s) exist in parent order’ setting to avoid suggesting items customers are already buying.
You can also skip showing offers for products they’ve bought before or let them choose their own quantities.
To change the look of the offer page, go ahead and switch to the ‘Design’ tab.
Here, you will see a button directing you to the block editor or the page builder of your choice. Simply click on the ‘Edit … Template’ button to open it.
Now, feel free to customize the offer page just as you would when editing any page with the editing platform of your choice.
For example, you can briefly mention the benefits of claiming the offer or change the call-to-action button text to better capture attention.
The page also includes smart tags that automatically replace placeholder text with information like the customer’s first name and the product name. We recommend keeping these tags to make sure the message feels personal and clear to your customers.
If you use the block editor and need some pointers, then you can read our guide on how to use the WordPress block editor (Gutenberg tutorial).
Once done, just save your changes, and click on the button that says ‘Back to Funnel Edit Page.’
Lastly, head to the ‘Settings’ tab for some advanced options.
Here, you can set up ‘Dynamic Shipping,’ which lets you charge separate shipping costs for these additional items.
This is helpful when your frequently bought together items have different shipping requirements.
Consider enabling the ‘Ask Confirmation’ setting too.
This adds a simple confirmation step when customers accept your offer, preventing accidental clicks and ensuring they really want the additional items.

Finally, click ‘Enable Store Checkout’ to make your new checkout process live.
That’s it!
Here’s how your order bump will appear to customers:
After customers fill in their checkout information, they’ll see your carefully crafted offer.
They can easily add these complementary items to their order with a single click, making the buying process smooth and convenient.
Method 3: Use YITH WooCommerce Frequently Bought Together (Free + Bundle Pricing)
This method builds on WooCommerce’s basic linked products tool but adds more engaging features to your product page. Mainly, it can bundle related products into a cohesive package right on the product page.
Unlike the basic ‘You may also like…’ feature in Method 1, this WooCommerce plugin allows customers to add a complete bundle to their cart with a single click. They can also see the price they’ll have to pay in total.
Plus, you can change the ‘Frequently Bought Together’ title and the button text to align better with your store’s brand.
The free version gives you everything you need to create attractive product bundles that catch your customers’ attention. But there is also a pro version that gives you more targeting and display options to take your product recommendations to the next level.
If you’re not familiar with the process, then check out our beginner’s guide on how to install a WordPress plugin.
Then, once you’ve activated your preferred plugin, head to YITH » Frequently Bought Together.
In the ‘Settings’ tab, you can personalize how your suggestions appear on the product page.
You can change the section’s title, adjust how the total price displays, and customize the add-to-cart button text to make it more compelling.
Want to make your recommendations stand out? Scroll down to change the button colors to match your store’s theme.
Don’t forget to click ‘Save Options’ when you’re done.
Now, either create a new product or edit an existing one in WooCommerce.
After that, just scroll down to the ‘Product data’ section. Then, choose the products you want to display in the frequently bought together box in the appropriate field.
Once you’re done, just scroll back up.
Finally, click ‘Update’ or ‘Publish’ to save your changes.
When you visit your product page, you should now see a frequently bought together box that appears right below the product image.
