EVERYTHING is smart with a bit of AI thrown in these days – even your bed.
Many people turn to a smartwatch or ring to keep track of their sleep but some beds can monitor all that without wearing any gadgets at all.
There are other issues that are harder to manage – such as snoring.
My partner is a frequent snorer and it can cause problems for my own kip.
So you can imagine my joy when I heard about the Tempur Ergo Smart Base’s snore preventing tech.
You can control this adjustable base with Alexa – and there’s even massage functions.
I tried it with the latest Tempur Pro Air SmartCool Luxe mattress, which uses Nasa memory foam technology.
The new mattress is available exclusively from Dreams, which it describes as the “coolest mattress ever”.
So how did we get on?
Tempur Pro Air SmartCool Luxe mattress
Starting with the mattress comfort, Tempur is undeniable comfortable and instantly moulds to your body.
The last time my back felt this good was when I was just a kid.
There are three firmness choices – soft, medium and firm – and I went for the medium option.
And so that we can adjust each side independently, we opted for the two 3’0 Motion single mattresses.
Tempur’s cover does the cooling work, with clever technology designed to absorb excess heat.
As a bit of a hot sleeper, this sounds ideal for me – and without any sheets on it certainly feels cool.
Having done a bit of digging, users of Tempur mattresses have sometimes complained that they’re hotter than other mattresses.
This is my first time sleeping on a Tempur so can’t attest to their previous models but I certainly don’t feel overheated on the Pro Air SmartCool – nor do I feel cold.
You’ll need some extra-deep fitted sheets for these mattresses; otherwise, they have a tendency to ping off.
Tempur Ergo Smart Base
The Tempur Ergo Smart Base is available in several designs – I went for the wave headboard in stone with oak feet.
It’s a vertical stitch woven back and looks pretty elegant with the wave effect.
The frame also feels extremely solid, assuring me that it will probably last for quite some time.
We have a split base set up so we have control of our own side.
The base is quite high up, which is unsurprising given this is adjustable.
You can adjust it to sit you up – perfect for watching TV – or raise your legs up slightly for extra comfort.
Each side has a remote control to switch things up as you see fit.
There is a massage feature too with three intensities but I’d say it’s more of a vibration than anything relaxing.
However, the vibration does have a far more useful feature, which I discuss below.
Smart features
The Tempur Ergo Smart Base is packed with cool features you may not expect from a bed.
Firstly, you can programme the vibration to serve as an alarm to gently wake you up in the morning – which I prefer over horrible noises blasting from my phone.
But the most surprising feature is the snore detection.
Fear not – your bed isn’t listening to you.
Instead, it is able to sense micro-vibrations from snoring.
At this point, it automatically raises the head of the bed 12 degrees, elevating the upper body to free the sleeper’s airways and prevent snoring.
My partner definitely snores, so I expected to find him raised the next morning; but to my surprise, I was the one who was raised.
I was aware that I snore occasionally but it turns out mine is so bad that I had to be raised – maybe my own snoring has been disturbing me all these years, and not my other half’s.
The motion does its work gently as you sleep, so I had no idea I had been “moved” so to speak.
Aside from this, there is the sleep tracker.
Much like a smart watch, this measures how well you’re sleeping each night without any restrictive devices on your wrists or fingers.
The Sleeptracker-AI app goes into detail about deep, light, REM and awake stages of your sleep each night, as well as heart rate, breath rate and snoring.
An AI Sleep Coach provides greater insight and tips on how to improve your sleep.
You can also pair the app up with Alexa so you can do motion controls with your voice so you don’t have to even raise a finger.
It’s worth noting that there are USB ports on each side of the bed too which are handy to keep your phone charged overnight.
Conclusion
The Tempur Pro Air SmartCool is undoubtedly the most comfortable mattress I have ever slept on – I have never woken up each morning feeling quite so fresh and well-rested.
And the Tempur Ergo Smart Base has many perks that perfectly complement the mattress — I really love that I no longer need to wear any smart devices to track my sleep.
The so-called massage feature wasn’t particularly relaxing but it does serve as a great replacement for my alarm.
But as with any top quality bed, price is a major factor.
The Tempur Ergo Smart Base with Wave Headboard is £5,999.
And the Tempur Pro Air SmartCool Luxe mattress is £2,099 for the two singles.
So that’s £10,197 in total which is a big ask.
But if you’re big on having the absolute best sleep coupled with handy smart features, this is the one.
