“These are my principles. If you don’t like them, I have others,” said Groucho Marx. On Instagram they seem to have applied that philosophy, because they have made a unique announcement. One that will allow us to have some control over the recommendation algorithm that dominates our accounts.
Reset the algorithm. The company led by Adam Mosseri has announced a most striking feature. This is the ability to reset Instagram’s recommendation algorithm. The option is in the testing phase, but it proposes something that until now almost no other had done: that if we do not like the recommendations we are receiving, we can “start from scratch” with that system.

Reeducate your Insta. By resetting the recommendations, we can re-educate the algorithm so that it adapts better and from the beginning to the content we like when we visit the Home, Reels and Explore sections. In 2023 TikTok offered a similar feature with its “For You” section, which could also be “re-educated.”
But be careful. Adam Mosseri himself explained that the option is not designed to be used constantly, and should only be used when the user really wants to start from scratch. “I want to make it clear,” he explained, “this is a big deal if you do it. It’s going to make your Instagram a lot less interesting at first, because it’s going to treat you like we don’t know anything about your interests and it’s going to take some time to get to know them.”
Account Cleanup. Resetting the recommendation algorithm will also give the option to review which accounts we are following to stop following them if any of them are sharing content that we no longer want to see. The feature is rolling out globally.
