Apple is set to begin work on the iOS 27 operating system, which will be a very different release for the brand as it’ll be designed for the upcoming iPhone Fold.
The iPhone maker is reportedly planning to begin work on the new operating system, which will include features designed specifically for the book-style foldable phone Apple is expected to launch next year.
According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the iOS 27 operating system will include features designed specifically for the phone, which is expected to rival the follow-up to the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and more of the best foldable options.
The so-called iPhone Fold is expected to address some of the common issues with foldables, such as the visibility of the crease on the inner display and the hinge mechanism. While these were issues with some of the original foldable devices, entries in the category recently have managed to alleviate these problems.
It could also ditch Face ID in favour of Touch ID within a side button. There’s very little doubt that this will be a pricey device, with estimates putting it at around $2000, which would make it the most expensive iPhone ever. Although we can see it being far more, especially if you’re after lots of internal storage.
As Apple prepares for this major shift, hopefully it’ll borrow many of the features that make iPadOS so good to improve the foldable experience. iPadOS 26, which will arrive in beta very soon for public testers, has the ability the resize apps and open them in a smaller window, something that would be very useful on a large-screen foldable.
Whatever Apple has in store for the iPhone Fold, it’ll be sure to come with a lot of anticipation and hype from fans and media alike. Before the expected 2026 release, we should see the iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 arrive alongside an iPad Pro M5.
