Shein is a global fashion platform that primarily focuses on women’s clothing. It was also available in India before 2020. But the Indian government banned the app including 300+ Chinese-linked apps citing national security. It was one of the apps to be banned by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. But as per new reports, one of the biggest fashion retailers could come back to India soon.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is expected to bring back Shein to India. The Chinese fashion retailer is set to make it come back to India but under strict rules and regulations imposed by the Indian government. Reports further say that the Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal mentioned in a parliamentary response that the Indian Telecommunication giant Reliance will maintain the ownership of the Shein and the fashion giant needs to adhere to the strict data regulations and requirements in the future.
As per reports, the country’s leading Reliance Retail Ventures has partnered with Roadget Business Pte Ltd. The Roadget is a retail company that owns Shein and handles its businesses. It will make sure that the Indian data remains within India as it will come under following and implementing robust security measures to secure Indian user’s data.
Shein will now fully operate as a technology company while Reliance holds all its ownership of the platform. Goyal in a Parliamentary response said, “The platform will be hosted on infrastructure in India and all platform data will remain in India.” This means Shein or its parent company will have no rights over Indian data. Under government rule, the platform will undergo regular audits by the government.
