Apple has confirmed that its until now Vice President of AI, John Giannandreain charge of supervising everything related to the company’s AI and machine learning strategy, He will leave his position and become a director of the company until his retirement in spring 2026. The company has experienced a notable delay in the development of its AI systems and functions, which has taken a significant toll on its CEO.
Apple has also announced who will be his successor: Artificial Intelligence researcher Amar Subramanya, who will be Apple’s Vice President of AI and will report directly to Craig Federighi. Subramanya will be responsible for areas considered critical to the company’s future, such as those related to Apple’s founding models, machine learning research, and AI evaluation and security. But he will not supervise all the areas that were until now under Giannandrea’s responsibility. Some will go to the divisions overseen by Sabih Khan and Eddy Cue.
Giannandrea joined Apple in 2018, and since then he has played a leading role in the company’s AI and machine learning strategy, with tasks ranging from creating the team that works on AI to supervising the development and deployment of different technologies. The team is currently responsible for Apple’s founding models, its search and knowledge areas, machine learning research, and AI infrastructure.
As for Subramanya, he has been Vice President of AI at Microsoft, and before that he spent 16 years at Google, where he was Head of Engineering for the Gemini Assistant. He has extensive experience in AI and machine learning research, as well as in integrating research in both technologies into products and functions.
