WhatsApp has shaken things up with a major change to its chat feature, but not everyone is happy.
Previously the popular app showed a ‘Typing’ sign at the top of chats to show the other person was getting ready to fire over a reply.
But WhatsApp’s three billion users are starting to notice this is no longer the case.
After capitalising the word earlier this year, the messaging platform has scrapped it entirely.
Instead, there are now three dancing dots at the bottom of the screen, which indicate the same thing.
The change hasn’t gone down too well with some of WhatsApp’s users.
Posting on X, Snehal said: ‘What the hell WhatsApp, what are these ellipsis? Bring back the good old “typing”.’
Charles Williamson said: ‘Not a fan of the new typing indicator on WhatsApp.’
The dislike is particularly intense for some users.
Farah said: ‘Hello @ WhatsApp can we just go back to so and so is typing? This dot dot dot bouncing up and down is getting to be annoying.’
Richy said: ‘The new Whatsapp typing animation seems purposely designed to give me anxiety.’
For some, the change makes WhatsApp just a little too similar to other, rival social media apps.
Miss How said: ‘WhatsApp now has the three dots typing thing like iMessage and I Hateeeee it!’
Sani said: ‘Now this animation is what appears when someone is typing a message, instead of “typing…” on the top. Literally changing WhatsApp into Insta.’
Others are actually quite fond of the change.
Titilola said: ‘I like whatsapp’s new typing animation.’
Dayo said: ‘WhatsApp finally removed the “typing” notification from the top and brought it downwards to where it belongs.’
WhatsApp has made several other significant changes in recent months.
It added a new ‘Message Drafts’ function earlier in November, AI has been introduced to offer conversation prompts, and users can also now do group video calls and can even reverse search images they’ve been sent.
Soon, WhatsApp will even let you add people without their phone number – they’ll have a username instead.
