Meta is dropping a new video tool that can add an invisible watermark to videos generated with artificial intelligence (AI). The tool, Video Seal, is going to join Meta’s list of watermarking tools. As claimed by the company, the tool will be open-sourced but the code of the same is yet to be published. It has also been mentioned by Meta that Video Seal will not affect the quality of the video.
Meta’s Video Seal tool details
As we all know with the rise in the usage of AI, deepfakes are taking over the internet. For those who are unaware, Deepfakes are generated via AI, and they show false and misleading objects, scenarios, personalities, and a lot more. Primarily, the content is used to spread false information all over the globe and it emerges as a major setback. This kind of content is also used for creating fake sexual content and even carrying out frauds and scams.
And the way AI systems are improving on their functioning, the deepfake content is becoming better and harder to recognize. According to a survey released by McAfee, 70 percent of people already feel that they are unable to distinguish between a deepfake video or voice and a real one. Another report by Sumsub suggested that deepfake frauds increased by around 1,740 percent in North America alone and by 1530 percent in the Asia-Pacific region in 2022. And surprisingly, the number increased more than ten times in the year 2023.
Due to the rising concerns related to deepfakes, the Company has been developing AI watermarking tools that can be used to at least identify the fake content available on any platform. Previously, Google released its SynthID tool to watermark all AI-generated videos and texts. After that, we got to see an identical tool from Microsoft as well. Furthermore, the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) is also working on new regulations to figure out and flag AI-generated content.
