Concretely, the user maintains a button pressed to speak, as on a real talkie-walkie. The message is then heard live by the members connected at that time. Just release the button to listen to others. No history is kept, no recording is stored in the discussion wire. And above all, no calls interrupt everyone: only those who choose to join the vocal session participate.
WhatsApp is caught up in a talkie-talkie
To activate this function, slide up from a group’s message bar, then press the circular button in the center of the screen. An animation is displayed, indicating that the vocal session is underway. The user can also send an emoji of hands to report to other members that the channel is active.
With the Talkie-Walkie mode, WhatsApp wants to fill a void between group calls (often deemed too intrusive) and vocal notes (often too long or invasive). The functionality is aimed at all kinds of situations: organize an outing with friends, coordinate an event, distribute tasks in a team, or simply exchange on the fly without overloading the conversation.
For professionals, especially VSEs or mobile teams, this also makes it possible to transmit instructions without cutting the pace of work. In a personal setting, it is a fairly effective way to improvise a vocal exchange without soliciting everyone intrusive.
Among the advantages put forward, we note the speed of use, low consumption of data and greater discretion. No one is obliged to participate, and nothing appears in the history of the group once the session is over. Once the conversation is over, everything disappears.
On the technical side, WhatsApp specifies that the functionality is light in data and battery, since it is based on short audio exchanges broadcast only to present users. Be careful however: for the mode to be active in a group, all participants must have a recent version of the application. Otherwise, the function can remain inaccessible.
Inspired by CB radios or former talkies-walkies, this mode recalls more direct, more alive, and almost … nostalgic! Far from the long audio notes left in burst or group calls that break the feet at all times, this system will certainly find its usefulness in fast exchanges where writing is less practical.
This novelty is added to other functions that have recently appeared in WhatsApp: the creation of favorite contact lists, private reactions to the statutes or the direct addition of contacts from the application.
