It’s the end of Nokia phones in the United States… again. HMD Global, the brand that took on the Nokia name in 2016 to make new phones under the iconic moniker, is stepping back from the US citing a “challenging” economic environment. This move also includes the brand’s own HMD-branded devices.
HMD Global has said it will be scaling back all of its US operations, effective immediately. In recent months, the brand has been quietly removing phones from sale in the US and discontinuing older devices.
The company’s latest phone, called the Fusion X1, didn’t go on sale in the US despite being on sale in most of its key markets. The brand has also been moving many of its Nokia devices to a separate page on its website away from its HMD phones.
Back in January, many of the listing pages for Nokia-branded phones were updated to say the devices were discontinued.
Some devices, including 2024’s HMD Vibe, remain on sale in the US, but this appears to be the company working through the end of its stock. PCMag found the “Where to buy” buttons on the company’s US website no longer work. However, Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart all continue to stock the phone.
HMD Global’s announcement came in a statement shared with Wired’s Julian Chokkattu where the brand said it will continue to offer support to those with devices. It said, “We will continue to honour all obligations, including warranty coverage and service for existing products, and provide full support through our global teams.”

HMD Global doesn’t specify whether ongoing tariffs with the US impacted the decision, but it does cite “a challenging geopolitical and economic environment”. As a Finnish brand, it may be part of why the company has decided to step back. The brand specialized in cheaper phones, which can be difficult to make profitable with slim margins on every sale.
The Nokia name may continue elsewhere in the world for the best part of the next year. HMD Global’s deal to use the Nokia name runs out in March 2026. One leaker called @smashx_60 on X said back in April their sources believe it will still make five new phones before the deal runs out.
