Google continues to expand its Meet video conferencing platform with new features that help participants appear their best. Last week, the Mountain View troops joined Microsoft Teams and Zoom by integrating a “Makeup” tool which, as its name suggests, allows you to apply virtual makeup in real time.
Currently, twelve different options are available, with different lipstick, foundation and eyeshadow shades designed to complement a wide variety of faces and clothing styles.
The Mountain View firm has ensured that the illusion will remain perfect in all circumstances, even in conditions that are anything but ideal. For example, in one of the demonstration clips presented in its blog post, Google shows one of its product managers passing her hand in front of her lips, without affecting the consistency or quality of this virtual makeup which relies on artificial intelligence.
Note that this “Makeup” option is not (yet) accessible to everyone. For the moment, it remains reserved for Google Workspace and Google One subscribers, two plans whose prices start at €6.80 and €1.99 per month and per user respectively.
AI at the service of image
This new feature joins a long series of AI-based tools integrated into Meet in recent months: automatic framing, brightness correction, background noise removal, dynamic backgrounds, etc. Together, all of these tools allow users to appear their best, regardless of the environment they’re logging into their meeting from.
It is also part of a broader trend, on which all the major videoconferencing services have started to surf since the generalization of this practice during the Covid-19 pandemic. With the democratization of teleworking, Google, Microsoft and others are competing in ingenuity to make video calls more comfortable and less restrictive.
It will be interesting to see how the digital giants continue to expand this ecosystem. Who knows; At the rate these platforms are growing, perhaps an avatar based on our appearance will soon be able to replace us entirely in these meetings!
