“Doom” is often the favorite title for modders looking to experience a game on a platform it was not designed for. Over the years we’ve seen ‘Doom’ run on cameras, ATMs, pianos and many other random devices. But there is life beyond ‘Doom’. Someone has managed to get out some parts of ‘Sonic’ on a calculator.
A YouTube user named Barcade has shared a video of just over six minutes in which he can be seen enjoying ‘Sonic X Shadow Generations’ on none other than a Texas Instrumentos-84 Plus CE device. “I already mastered the game, so I needed a new challenge,” says the modder, who has a video game channel and decided to take the challenge to the next level.

Barcade has yet to share details of the project, so we don’t know exactly how he accomplished this feat. In the images we can see him using the calculator buttons to move the hedgehog through the different scenarios of the game, and the images move to 2 frames per seconda truly infuriating speed.
When we talk about ‘Sonic X Shadow Generations’ we are referring to a game released this year for new generation platforms. That is, it has landed on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X | S and PC. There is no doubt that the modder was not running the game directly on the hardware content of the calculator.
The IT-84 Plus CE model has a small 2.8-inch screen of 20 x 240 pixels (140 DPI), 149 KB of RAM and 3 MB of Flash ROM memory. However, it does have a USB port, as well as a Python programming environment. Barcade would have found a way to use the graphing calculator as a controller and playback device rather than a console.

Most likely, the modder also used an additional monitor when playing. In any case, the idea of bringing games to completely unusual devices is still interesting. When asked by users on YouTube, Barcade promised to share a tutorial with the details of his project. We will soon know exactly how he achieved it.
