Would the arrival of Apple Intelligence make the Apple brand generous? The Cupertino company has just updated its powerful MacBook Pro, but it has also decided to double the amount of memory in its MacBook Air. The general public laptop, previously offered with 8 GB of memory at entry level, now includes 16 GB of memory. A measure which concerns both the 13-inch model with an M2 or M2 chip and the 15-inch version with an M3 chip. The best part is that the memory doubling is done without any Price change!
The MacBook Air is still listed at 1,199 euros and it is no longer necessary to add 230 euros to go from 8 to 16 GB of RAM. A small revolution in the world of Apple, known to be stingy when it comes to RAM.
Apple lied a bit with the 8 GB of RAM
Last year, a controversy broke out regarding the amount of memory in Macs. Even the most powerful models in the range (MacBook Pro M3 or iMac M3) came by default with 8 GB of RAM, sparking some criticism for machines launched in 2023. A brand manager then tried to extinguish the start of the fire, stating that “8 GB at Apple corresponds to 16 GB in another system”. The other system in question is none other than Windows and if the effectiveness of Apple Silicon chips is real, it was already difficult to prove Apple right. Even our colleague Pierre Dandumont from the specialized site MacGeneration confirmed that « 8 Go chez Apple » could not match “16 GB in another system”.
A year later, the deployment of Apple Intelligence pushed the brand to review its position and abandon the idea of offering machines with 8 GB of RAM. The new iMac, Mac mini or MacBook Pro M4 all offer at least 16 GB of RAM. While waiting for a technical update, even the MacBook Air equipped with older chips is entitled to this new feature.
The influence of AI is such that even non-“Pro” iPhone 16s have more RAM than before. Even if it does not always interest the general public, artificial intelligence has beneficial effects on the manufacturer’s discourse. On the other hand, you will still have to wait before benefiting from a 512 GB SSD by default.
