Nscale, the London-based AI hyperscaler company, has been tapped by ChatGPT developer OpenAI to build European AI data centre initiative Stargate Norway.
The project marks OpenAI’s first European-based AI data centre scheme that it claims will provide large-scale compute capacity to European developers, researchers and startups.
UK-based Nscale, which last year closed a $155m (£118m) Series A round, will design and construct the Norwegian site in partnership with energy group Aker.
OpenAI described Stargate Norway as one of the “most ambitious AI infrastructure investments in Europe to date” with plans to deliver 230MW of capacity, with plans to expand by an additional 290MW. The site will run entirely on renewable power.
The capacity will support the tech developments of the Norwegian AI ecosystem, with surplas capacity to be made available for public and private sector users across the UK as well as the rest of the Nordics and other parts of Northern Europe.
Stargate Norway follows the launch of Stargate UAE, announced in May 2025, the first international deployment of OpenAI’s Stargate AI infrastructure platform, in the Middle East.
The US AI giant recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the UK government committing to support the country’s efforts to expand its AI infrastructure and digital adoption goals.
