WhatsApp has always been very clear about its end-to-end encryption — neither Meta nor WhatsApp can read the messages, access calls, or media. However, many people have always been wary of WhatsApp claims and suggested that the tech giant does have access to our data. While adding fuel to the fire, Paytm founder Vijay Shekar Sharma has shared a post on X, which claims that “Today onwards, WhatsApp is allowing AI to Read Chats.” Here, he specifically focused on the WhatsApp group chats.
Along with the claim, he also suggested a simple trick to stop Meta AI from reading your chats – enabling Advanced Chat Privacy. What is it? And does Meta AI actually read our WhatsApp group messages? Here is the whole truth.
Can Meta AI Read Your Group Messages?
Just clear the confusion in the beginning, WhatsApp is not rolling out this feature today. Even the instant messaging app had introduced this feature back in April for group chats.
So, the next important question that can haunt many WhatsApp users is – can Meta AI really read your chats in a group? The clear answer is “No.” When WhatsApp introduced Meta AI on its platform, it clearly mentioned, “Meta can only read messages that mention @Meta AI or that people choose to share with it, not any others. As always, your personal messages and calls are protected with end-to-end encryption, meaning no one outside of the chat, not even WhatsApp or Meta, can read, listen to, or share them.”
That means your WhatsApp messages are end-to-end encrypted and can’t be accessed by WhatsApp or Meta AI. However, Meta AI can read the messages that you ask or share with it.
The fact shared by the Paytm Founder seems to be inaccurate. WabetaInfo, the WhatsApp update tracker, has further clarified this.

So, What Is WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy Feature?
Introduced back in April 2025, the WhatsApp Advanced Chat Privacy feature for chats and groups is basically to ensure that the content doesn’t go beyond WhatsApp with extra privacy features. When you enable it, you can prohibit others from exporting chats, auto-downloading media or using messages for AI features.
