ONE of America’s largest banks is set to close down another branch just a year after shutting down a separate location a half-mile away.
PNC Bank have over 2,600 branches across the US but the latest shock closure is set to force customers to travel to a completely different town to access their cash.
The branch located at 2085 E University Drive in Auburn is set to close down for good on February 21, 2025, according to a company spokesperson.
The bank is in a popular location just across from the bustling Auburn Mall.
It is due to consolidate with the Tiger Town branch which is at 2426 Enterprise Drive in Opelika.
The spokesperson added: “This decision was based on our ongoing review of client transaction patterns to ensure our branch network most effectively meets the evolving needs of our local markets and communities.”
It is unclear how many employees are set to be affected by the closure.
The company declined to confirm if they are offering them similar roles at nearby PNC Bank locations.
This latest closure comes just a year after the Pennsylvania-based bank pulled down the shutters at another branch on 1433 Opelika Road.
The location was less than half-a-mile away from the Auburn branch.
BANKING BLOODBATH
Banks across the US have been closing at an alarming rate in the past year.
Over 1,100 branches have closed their doors for the final time since January, according to data from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.
Experts say this trend is mainly down to a growing preference among citizens to use online banking over in store visits.
Brick-and-mortar banking has seen a significant decline overall since 2009, with 20,000 locations shuttering since that time, per the FDIC.
Prominent financial institution First National Bank and Trust Company are among those making changes.
They shuttered three branches in the same state recently.
Branches in Alex, Cyril, and Rush Springs in Oklahoma are expected to close in the coming weeks.
No final date of business has been announced as of yet.
Citizens Bank noted in October that it would shutter 15 branches across six states in the northeast.
Most, including a location in East Providence, Rhode Island, will close for good on January 22, 2025, according to what a spokesperson told Providence Business News (PRN).
In 2024, at least 79 branches from JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo have all closed.
At least 18 banks are also closing for good inside Walmart stores nationwide by the end of the year.
