The summer season is right around the corner, and it’s the perfect time to head outdoors to enjoy the warm weather.
REI, or Recreational Equipment Incorporated, is helping shoppers stock up on all their summer needs by opening more locations.
The new spots will offer consumers high-quality outdoor apparel and equipment for a range of activities, from camping and hiking to climbing and cycling.
Shoppers can also take advantage of the in-store full-service bike shop as well as seasonal ski and snowboard shops at the REI stores in cold weather locations, per an October press release that announced the new stores.
REI, a consumer co-operative, chose the store sites based on their proximity to outdoor recreation landmarks, vice president Mary-Farrell Tarbox shared in the release.
“Cities that will have new stores represent communities that serve as a gateway to some of the country’s most incredible natural places and where our members currently live or destinations where they love to play outside,” she said.
The three new spots, set to open by the end of this summer, will be located in California and Colorado.
The first brand new REI to open its doors will be in Chico, California, 80 miles north of Sacramento, expected to open on June 20.
A new REI store in Elk Grove, California, roughly 15 miles south of Sacramento, will welcome in customers on July 25.
The third grand opening, in Durango, Colorado, approximately 360 miles south of Denver, which will open in August.
The U.S. Sun reached out to REI for more information on the impending store openings.
NEW OUTPOSTS
REI, a popular American retail and outdoor recreation services corporation, was founded in 1938 in Seattle, Washington.
The company was launched when a group of 23 climbing friends decided to create a co-operative to source affordable, quality outdoor gear.
REI has since grown into a major player in the outdoor gear category, operating nearly 200 stores and competing with big names such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Patagonia, and North Face.
The company has grown a massive following of loyal shoppers and outdoor enthusiasts, with fans even calling REI the “best store ever.”

The co-op is working to grow its fan base by bringing its beloved outdoor gear to more spots across the country.
REI has already opened a new store so far this year and completed two relocations.
A brand new spot in Amherst, New York, opened in April, while a REI formerly in Alderwood, Washington, was relocated to Lynnwood that same month.
Earlier in February, a REI in Encinitas, California, was moved to Carlsbad.
The popular retailer has even more expansion plans in the works, plotting to open new stores in Prosper, Texas, and St. George, Utah, next year.
Other beloved retail chains are expanding their store footprint as well.
For example, a popular home improvement store “better than Home Depot” has confirmed plans to open up 10 new locations this year.
Plus, a beloved furniture chain opened another store in a key US state – and six more locations are to arrive.
